Today, I submitted my final year project report to the department as a fresh graduate of Agricultural and Bio-resources engineering.

The HOD (Head of Department) is expected to sign the report before submission, so I was in his office as early as 8 am but he wasn't seated.

After waiting for about 2 hours, He arrived in his official car—a black Toyota Corolla (2010 model).

I saw him walk into the departmental building with a small handbag strapped to his left hand.

Waited a few more minutes before I went into his office.

Eventually, the secretary, a tall fat woman called me in. She should be in her late fifties. That woman is unnecessarily lousy.

Walked in & stood in front of the HOD

HOD: Sit down

Me: OH wow, sit down keh. This man is even nice (I've never had a close encounter with him until today).

Then he proceeds to sign the reports. The gist continued:

HOD: What's your plan after school? Going for a masters?

Me: Yes, I want to further my studies. (Meanwhile, in my mind; my plan after school is to take my online business to the next level. How I wish I could tell him that.)

HOD: Fine. What grade did you graduate with?

Me: Second class upper sir.

HOD: 4 point what?

Me: 4.2 sir.

*End of discussion*

This brings me back to the point that, a lot of our parents & people of their generation still see academics as the only pathway to success.

Currently, my parents think I'm jobless. They think I've been staying back in school since I graduated sleeping & doing nothing. They can't fathom the fact I work from home.

If you're still in school, I would say take your academics seriously but at the same time start building the foundation for your life outside of school.

I could have graduated with a first-class if I dedicated 100% of my attention to academics like most people would do. I had a first-class result 4 semesters out of 10. No regrets at all.

I am that I built something while in school. And so should you.
