This single decision has the power to shape the rest of their lives

I might have just found a new passion outside marketing.
And that is...
Inspiring secondary students & helping them make better life choices.
The secondary school is the most important place in the life of teenagers
This is where they make decisions that shape the rest of their lives.
In JSS3, students would be expected to decide whether to join the science, art or commercial department
This decision is however largely influenced by parents, teachers & peers.
Students who are perceived to be brilliant are thrown into the science department
While the rest fight for a seat in other department, students are not examined outside the conventional educational system before they're allowed to make a choice.
Nobody asks about your dreams.
Nobody pays attention to your talents.
Not parents. Not teachers. Nobody!!!
They're only concerned about your performance in class.
However, in circumstances where these students are allowed to make these choices themselves.
They are not provided with enough information to guide them.
As secondary school students...
I believe we were too young to choose a career path.
Yet, expected to do so.
It is unfair that nobody was willing to tell us that whatever career path we chose could make or mar us.
Nobody was willing to walk us through how to choose a career path.
We shouldn't be making decisions whose consequences we were unaware of.
Because these decisions would however haunt us forever.
Take me as an example. I'm an engineering student. Yet, I write, tweet, sleep and think about about sales & marketing.
If I knew better back then in secondary school...
Maybe I wouldn't have chosen to be in the science department back.
Some of my peers which I've spoken to also feels the same.
They wish someone walked them through the voyage of choosing a career path. I once discussed this with my brothers,
And we both agreed something needs to be done.
We can't watch these kids repeat the mistakes we made.
There & then, we decided we would be visiting secondary schools to tell them what we wish we knew at their age.
Our three-point agenda includes:
1- Counseling secondary school students on how to choose a career path.
2- Exposing them to the realities of life in the university.
3- Introducing them to digital skills.
We started with our Alma mata- our secondary school.
This is just the beginning. We hope to do more.
Have a good day

Benson
