Do not Pick a niche. Do this instead.

As a budding content creator, affiliate marketer, or freelancer.

You must have heard this a few times; "Pick a niche" -which I said in my last email is not the right thing to do.

Perhaps you missed that, search for my email titled "Picking a niche is a bad advice" in your inbox. Or write to me to get it.

The argument right now is:

If picking a niche is bad. Then, what's the alternative?

Because let's face it...

Not picking a niche doesn't look like a great idea either. Doing that will land you in a pit laced with confusion. So what should you do?

At this juncture, I want you to take a few steps back.

Your idols - The people you admire, why did you choose them? Have you ever asked yourself that question?

Permit me to use myself as an example:

If you've been following me for a while. You should know by now how much I adore Russell Brunson for his success as an online entrepreneur. Everyone has that one person in their life

But why Russell Brunson? Hundreds of people do the same thing he does. He is not the only successful entrepreneur online. Yet, I have made him my idol.

Just like you must have done too, everybody has an idol—someone whose lifestyle inspires them.

The question is: Can you articulate how that decision came to be?

Before you provide an answer. Hold on a little bit. I’m not done with you.

When you define yourself using just your niche, You have agreed to describe yourself using abstract terms.

  • I am an affiliate marketer.
  • I am a copywriter.
  • I am an Amazon KDP expert.

Let's say you're even a bit more creative:

  • I affiliate for digital products in the wealth niche.
  • I am a copywriter in the health niche.
  • I teach people how to make money using the Hybrid Amazon KDP system.

Still abstract.

However, there's a standard marketing rule: People buy people. Not products (abstracts)

This takes us back to my previous question.

You didn’t choose your idol because he/she is an affiliate marketer, copywriter or whatever.

You did because there's something about him/her you admire; their identity.

If you ask me, I chose Russell Brunson as my idol because he excelled despite performing poorly in school. Beyond that, his lifestyle (as far as I can tell) resonates with me.

I'm sure you'll have something close to that to say about your idol.

We choose our mentors because they embody the lifestyle & qualities we wish we had. They appear to us like our future selves.

People buy with emotions & justify with logic.

We buy make-money online courses from people who appear to be rich. Not necessarily because we are convinced they can make us rich.

We bought into their identity, not the product (course).

This is what I'm driving to: Instead of picking a niche. Choose an identity.

  • Instead of choosing to be an affiliate marketer; Identify as an undergraduate who teaches fellow students how to make money through affiliate marketing.

  • Instead of creating content on how to make money online; Create content on how mothers like you can make money online.

  • Instead of creating videos on copywriting; Shoot videos that help business owners make more sales using some copywriting techniques.

Bottom line: Choose an identity, not a niche.
