Dear reader,

You know how I know I'm a fantasy nerd? I can't just sit back and enjoy the holiday season without relating it to world-building...

Brace yourself.

Whenever things start getting festive, my mind wanders back to my favorite fantasy feasts and festivals. There's Sunday and Bel Tine from The Wheel of Time, Black Sun's Winter Solstice is certainly a horrifying addition, and then there's my personal favorite: the Midwinter Pageantry from The Name of the Wind. I will always be amazed at how Rothfuss managed to craft a unique fantasy holiday that perfectly aligned with the cultures and religions of his world while still capturing that bleak, Charles Dickens-y charm of a Victorian English Christmas. Awesome.

You see, for me, a good fantasy festival is all about tying together as many aspects of the world as possible. You get to show the biases and historical trauma of your civilization, the origin of its idioms and superstitions, the art, the music, the fashion...

...and then there's the food.

Is it just me, or is there anything more mesmerizing that reading a fantasy novel's description of food? I've often thought of throwing together a fantasy-inspired feast for the holidays. Can't you picture it?

We'd start with some Harry Potter pumpkin pasties nestled beside a buttery pile of Tolkien lembas bread. Then comes the honey-basted roasts and hams from Game of Thrones. Maybe a Skyrim sweet roll to finish things off.

I shared mine, so now it's your turn. What are your favorite fantasy feasts and festivals? Shoot me an email!
