Spring is HERE! …. And so are my spring allergies and newfound anxiety about sneezing in public during a global pandemic! Oof!

This is a big newsletter to close out March. I have multiple new releases to tell you about, some amazing collaborative projects I’m working on, a free flash fiction piece just for my readers, and some more recommendations to fill your Kindle for Spring Break!  Whoo! Let’s dive in! 

You might remember from my last newsletter that I am now a part of the Wild At Heart PNR Flash Fiction Writing Circle. Our theme for March was “Luck” and once again, we only got 1,000 words to tell our story! I used this month as a way to show you a new idea I’m working on. A sharp knock on the door broke the silence in the dingy, dark office. Compared to the lively environment out on the gaming floor, everything here was dismal and grey. Two large men walked in and calmly shut the door behind them. They studied me intently and that all-too familiar sense of fear rocketed down my spine. I swallowed hard and returned my gaze back down to the floor.

I shouldn’t be here.

Mama always said this place was the Devil’s den. If I listen hard enough, I can almost hear her husky voice warning me in my head.

“Lily-girl, the affairs of the wolves aren’t our business. We stay on our side, they stay on theirs. It’s the way it is. Don’t go inviting trouble into your life by carrying on with the likes of them.”

A lump formed in my throat and I fought against the tears that pricked behind my eyes.

The way it is. More like, the way it was.

I would give anything to hear her one more time. But she’s gone now and there are still mouths to feed at home.

Mama lived by the mantra of survival, at all costs. And that’s what I planned to do.

Survive.

I’ve been lucky so far and I have to believe my luck isn’t ready to run out.

“Little rabbit, do you know why you’re here?” a deep voice broke my  musing and I looked up quickly to study the speaker.

I had nicknamed him “The Sheriff” when I scouted everything earlier. His crisp denim shirt, worn jeans, and old fashioned gun belt reminded me of a bygone era. I couldn’t help but notice how his clothing clung to his muscular frame like a glove and a small tingle of awareness flowed through me. His height caused him to loom over me, all powerful legs, broad shoulders, and sharp features. He smelled like danger and despite my fears, it intrigued me.  I licked my dry lips and tried to control the shiver that ran through me.

Focus, Lily. This isn’t the time.

“No,” I whispered, staring at his intricate belt buckle, “I mean, I didn’t break any rules. Prey species are allowed to be here. I checked.”

“What’s your name?” he asked gruffly.

I froze for a second, mind racing. Should I give him my real name? Should I have a fake name? Options flew through my mind making me feel slightly sick. I was caught anyway, might as well be honest.

“Lily. Lily Meadows.” I forced out, my heart beating madly.

“Well, Ms. Meadows, my name is Rafe and this is Orion. You’re a long way from home if you’re here in Southland Pack territory.”

The lump in my throat slowly turned into a brick and threatened to suffocate me. I managed a short nod and Rafe studied me for another moment before slamming his clipboard on the metal desk loud enough to make me jump out of my skin.

“You’re either the bravest little bunny I’ve ever encountered, or the stupidest,” he laughed, moving to sit behind the desk. “So, satisfy our curiosity and tell us what brought you to Southland and the Last Chance Saloon?”

This was my moment. I squared my shoulders and flipped my long blonde hair over my shoulder and drew in a deep breath and faced them.

 Orion had moved to stand behind Rafe with his hands clasped behind his back. Where Rafe was tall and muscular, Orion was stocky and barrel-chested. Rafe wore a pistol on his hip but Orion was armed with at least six different weapons that I could count from my vantage point. Watch out for that one, Lily.

“You’re losing money and someone has betrayed your Pack. I know who.” I began, confidently. “The coyote in the yellow shirt out there? He’s cheating. Card counting. Then there’s a panther in the back who deals in blood crystal. He offered it to one of your girls and she told him to get out so he hit her.”

A low growl sounded through the room and I glanced wide-eyed at Orion. Tufts of fur had sprouted on his arms and his fists were clenched by his sides. Rafe raised an eyebrow and gestured for me to continue.

“Those are bold accusations, little rabbit. If true, the guilty will pay with their lives. What is it you want for this information?” Rafe asked.

My eyes darted between the two of them while I tapped my fingers against the chair.

“I want a job, sir,” I started, tentatively, “Pred- I mean, your people, they don’t notice me. I can be your eyes out there. I work hard. I’m honest. I know all the card and dice games. I could - I could help you make sure your money stays with the Pack and in return, you give me a job and protect my family.”

Orion's bark of laughter broke the silence, and Rafe soon joined him. Cheeks burning, I fought the urge to run away in humiliation.

“What makes you think I need your eyes out there, little rabbit?” Rafe asked, finally.

I exhaled hard to calm myself and then looked over to Orion and back to Rafe, “Because you can’t see that the biggest thief of them all is standing right next to you.”

The room was silent before it exploded in movement. I shifted and ran, content to squeeze behind the metal bookcase and hide in the shadows. There, I watched as Rafe slammed Orion against the wall.

The hours passed and my luck held. Pack members and patrons came and went while Rafe meted out a brutal justice to all who had betrayed the Pack. Watching him work was terrifying...and mesmerizing. He moved with a deadly grace that called to me. When we were finally alone again, the dirty cement floor stained red with blood,  he looked directly at my hiding place and smiled.

“Come out, my lucky little rabbit,” he called, “You start tomorrow.”
