Remember that time Facebook went down?

You may have repressed the memory, but in October last year Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp went offline for 6 hours.

Panic ensued.

People simply didn’t know how to deal with it. We’ve become so used to instant communication that it was a shock.

It was down to a simple error. A configuration change disconnected Meta’s data centres from the internet.

Earlier in the year cloud computing service provider Fastly had its own outage, taking down Amazon, eBay, and Reddit.

If something like this can happen to giant corporations, it could happen to any business. And that could mean a big problem.
