"WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING IN 5 YEARS TIME?

Jun 03, 2024 10:06 am

Some years ago, I stood before my principal to answer a question that would later define my career path.

I was a serving Corp member at the time.

My principal, a powerful woman by all standards, was a former commissioner for Justice Ogun State asked my colleague (Co-Corper) and me a defining question in one of our weekly meetings..

"WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING IN 5 YEARS?

I thought long and hard about the question and then slowly and steadily answered her...

" I would like to have my practice in 5 years!"

I went further to tell her how I would go about it.

I would get extremely good with legal research, writing, and documentation and my ideas would stand out anywhere.

I would approach other law firms, lawyers, and senior colleagues and ask them to review their documents and processes or do a redraft.

My principal…In her usual no-nonsense she looked at me and said…

"So you think I will trust you with my processes in 5 years time?

My response?

Yes, Ma... I would be so good you would trust me with your processes.

Fast forward to 5 years later…

Not only did I have my own practice…

I also have colleagues and seniors who look up to me for help with their legal documentation and processes.

Sometimes last year a very significant thing happened.

I was on a call with my former principal…

I had called to check up on her.

She asked how I was doing.

I told her I was fine, and then we talked about work, I told her what I was building at Barinaada Legal, and thanked her for all of her efforts and "mentorship" over the years.

Just before the call ended, she said significant…

"Barinaada, if you have something for a SAN do, let me know"

That made me smile.

Looking back,  I have become what I told her I would be.

I have paid my dues and still paying to be at the top of my game.

I don't know who needs to hear this but listen to me…

Your dreams are valid.

I want you to put your right hand on your chest right now, close your eyes and slowly say this…

MY DREAMS ARE VALID. THOUGH I MIGHT NOT SEE IT NOW, BUT THEY WILL BE FULFILED.

Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Your dreams of building a great business are achievable.

You only need to put in the work, trust the process, and be patient.

Your time will come.

For some people, it may be 2 years, for others, it may be 7 years or even 10 years.

For me, it was 5 years.

When I left service, I was job hunting for any kind of job and very uncertain of how I would achieve my dream of owning my practice.

But 5 years later, I stood in my own tastefully furnished law office, with a dedicated team serving the kind of Clients that we are happy to serve.

Now, we have even done so much more than I dreamt of.

Again, your dreams are valid!

Believe…

And Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
