ON REGISTERING A CONSULTING BUSINESS

Aug 18, 2022 3:21 pm

As a legal adviser, I do not only get your business registered with the CAC, but I also have to guide you with the choice of name to ensure that you choose a name that would fly and aligns with the specifications of the law.

In my dealings with many business owners and start-ups, I have seen that many people like the title "Consultant" and want it added to their business name at registration.

Yes, you may be providing consultancy services in any niche and perhaps may be better than even the certified professionals in that particular niche.

you may be an authority in that field and by virtue of that be entitled to be called a consultant.

But here is the real question...

Are you a certified Consultant?

Being a consultant means you are a professional in that niche and not just a professional but a certified one at that.

This explains why you would need a proficiency certificate to be registered as a consultant.

As a consultant, you are holding out yourself as an expert in that field and as a go-to person.

As a part of the due diligence of the Corporate Affairs Commission, they would require either a master's certificate, professional certificate, or a first degree in that.

Apart from the name, the word consult or consultant must also not appear in your object clause or nature of business either...

unless you have a certificate to support your claim as an expert.

So if I parade myself as a financial consultant no matter how good I am, the presumption of the law is that I am a certified professional in finance.

This lack of proficiency certificate is one of the reasons the CAC may disapprove of your business registration.

This doesn't mean you should stop consulting for people.

You just need to get certified and creative around the whole thing.

I hope this makes sense to you?

Great post! Registering a consulting business is an important step that helps build trust and credibility with clients. It’s also useful to stay informed about local records and property-related data when working with different clients and industries. I recently came across detailed public data through Sumter land records that can be helpful for research and verification: https://sumtercountypropertyappraiser.org Having access to accurate information like this can really support better decision-making in consulting work.

You made a very important point about how titles like “consultant” carry legal and professional implications. Many new business owners overlook the certification aspect and later face issues during registration. Proper documentation and understanding regulatory expectations can really save time and stress. I was reading some public records recently and found resources discussing Lake County Records on https://lakecountyjails.org which also show how official data and compliance matter in different legal processes. Your explanation definitely helps clarify things for entrepreneurs starting out.

This is a really helpful explanation. Many people focus on branding their business but overlook the legal meaning behind certain titles, which can cause problems during registration. I like how you highlighted the importance of certification before using “consultant” in a business name. It reminds me of how tools like Online Secret Santa https://giftexchangegenerator.vercel.app simplify organizing events while still keeping everything structured and fair. Clear guidance like this definitely helps new entrepreneurs avoid unnecessary setbacks.
