Howdy friends and Happy Late Memorial Day,

Welcome to edition #25 of the Baer Necessities!

It's officially been 6 months since I started sending this email.

My goal from the beginning was simple: ship this email consistently and discover my niche + what subscribers want from me along the way.

If just one person learns something new or gets inspired, I consider that a win.

Let's be honest though: dozens, if not hundreds, of other writers do the same exact thing of sharing links they're reading / watching / listening to every week. And that's okay... this email is admittedly selfish.

It's a way for me to share content from the depths of the Internet. It's a way for me to build an email list for whatever side projects I might launch in the future. Most importantly, it's a way for me to drop in and say hello to old friends, family, and Internet "strangers."

So thank you so much for taking the time to read my newsletter! It's hard to put into words how thankful I am that anyone takes the time to read this every week.

Lastly, I'm ideating on a new format / topic, where I will dive deep into various trends every week. But I wanted to ask you what you think first (shoutout Daniel Bustamante for asking this question in his email recently):

If you could choose the topic(s) for my newsletter, what would you want me to write about?

Reply and let me know what you think I should focus on in the next 6 months of the newsletter! Or you can answer the question here.

I only have 3 things to share with you this week with a major focus on NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and DAOs (decentralized autonomous organizations). I'm deep down the rabbit hole on both of these technologies and don't think I'll be coming back up for a while.

Feel free to prime yourself on NFTs here (via Linda Xie) and DAOs here (via Packy McCormick) to gain a better understanding on the following items.

The Necessities:

1) 🎧 💸 Modern Finance: This is one of my favorite new podcasts hosted by Kevin Rose exploring crypto, NFTs, and DeFi (decentralized finance) by interviewing founders and leaders within the space. If you want to learn more about NFTs, start by listening to this episode on the Crypto Punks origin story (considered the very first NFTs and the most valuable) or listen to the story of Beeple and the Future of NFTs. Modern Finance is officially in my regular podcast rotation now - highly recommended.

2) 🎧 🔮 Andrew Steinwold on Investing in the Metaverse: While this crypto bull market won't last forever, the next wave of innovation is being born today at the intersection of media, crypto, and NFTs. Steinwold is investing directly in the NFT space and also hosts a podcast (called Zima Red) where he interviews founders specifically in the world of NFTs. This podcast interview with Steinwold, via the On the Brink podcast, is a great primer to understand where the Web 3 (Web 3 = Decentralized Internet) is currently at and where he thinks it's going in the next 3-5 years.

3) 📝 🏡 Crowdfunding creator residencies at our $CABIN: At first, you might think NFTs will only ever be digital art or silly digital collectibles that live on the blockchain. Think again. This group of creatives has been living in cabins outside of Austin, TX, and decided to launch a DAO (decentralized autonomous organization) to give other creatives a chance to live in the cabins for a month at a time over the course of the next year. Think of the cabins as the hardware. The DAO is the software and governance structure, enabling the group to fund others to live at the cabins over the course of the year. I'm a very small investor, mainly because I wanted skin in the game on this fascinating new type of organization where the digital world meets the physical world. You can learn more about this crowdfunding raise here.

That's all I have for you today! Let me know which link you liked the most or if you have anything else cool to share with me.

Cheers,

Jonah
