The Baer Necessities

Hi friends,

Writing to you for the first time from Hollywood, Florida!

I'm in South Florida visiting my friend's condo and working from here for a week (big thanks and shout out to Daniel for the hospitality!).

And friends in Florida - if you're reading this, hit me up! I'll be around for a few more days.

Here is what you will find in this week's newsletter:

What I'm Working On

🚢 Ship 30 for 30:

If this sounds familiar, it's because I did the exact same challenge in November/ December! I'm one week into the January Ship 30 for 30 challenge — where I'm shipping 30 atomic essays in 30 days on my Twitter account.

But this month I'm focusing on crypto and startups — starting with some stories on how I started working in the crypto industry and how Derek Strauss and I started the Collegiate Blockchain Conference.

Below are links to my 3 favorite essays from this week (you can view every essay on this thread).

My 3 favorites essays from the first seven days:

Jack Mallers (founder of Strike) on We Study Billionaires:

Jack is the founder of Strike, a company making crypto payments with Bitcoin easy and fast. Strike is the company behind the news that Russel Okung (NFL player for the Carolina Panthers) is accepting half of his paycheck in Bitcoin. Jack is such a fascinating dude and makes you so excited about the future of crypto payments. Thanks to Harrison Chona for the recommendation!

Here is what you will learn:

  • What are the basics of the Bitcoin Lightning Network
  • How he started Strike and why he thinks crypto payments are going to become more and more common in the next few years
  • How crypto payment rails are making payments cheaper, faster, and more accessible to a global audience
  • His thoughts on inflation
  • How the deal is working with NFL star Russel Okung

The Best is Yet to Come (via the Not Boring newsletter by Packy McCormick)

Packy McCormick writes one of the best business newsletters in the world right now: Not Boring. As I reflect on the year we just had and the year ahead of us, this newsletter is the perfect companion to understand what just went down. If you haven't checked out Not Boring and Packy's newsletter, this essay is an amazing place to start. He talks about three reasons he's optimistic about the future:

  1. The markets are eating up technology
  2. Cloud Companies.
  3. The Passion Economy Writ Large.

My favorite image was a simple graph stolen from Tim Urban on how technological progress improves exponentially (and how we tend to naturally think linearly):

Question I'm Pondering 🤔

What is the first country you want to go to once international travel is acceptable again?

I'll start: Thailand / Vietnam.

Never been to SE Asia -- wanted to go there for a LONG time. Just starting to day-dream about post-pandemic life 💭
