Weekly Micro Story
Test
The roots pulled the doors open finger by finger. Sharia stepped through the gap, weapons at ready. Stale air washed over her face as the light behind her shone through into the ancient temple. The sun reflected off glittering facets further in, though it was impossible to see what reflected the light.
Her heart tightened with hope. Maybe all the risk to get her, the blood lost, the companions who died, and the gold it had cost. Sharia closed her eyes for a fraction of a second, then popped them back open, not willing to take a risk of missing an attack. She reached into her bag of holding, pulling out a glowing globe and tossed it into the room, legs tensed ready to spring back outside if anything moved.
The glow filled the area revealing a cluster of figures, all holding swords, gems on their armor, and holes where their faces should be. As the globe came to a stop their heads rotated to look at her. One of them stepped forward into the center, pivoting to be directly in front of her.
For a moment she considered diving back out the door. Sharia took a deep breath.
"It's another test, you can do this." The words sounded thin and hollow into the temple, but the prices paid made her walk into the center of the space. She'd paid too high a price to back out now.
"Don't fail." The words were the last one she said as the automaton lunged at her.
