WHAT DO CLEOPATRA AND THE MONTH OF AUGUST HAVE IN COMMON?
Hey Thriller fans,
with Cleopatra's Vendetta coming out 11/15, I thought you might enjoy two chances to win an advance copy, plus get a little background about the ancient queen, who killed herself on August 10, 30 BC. Read on...
This is from the AUTHOR'S NOTE at the back of the book:
Cleopatra had sparkling eyes, a commanding presence, and a rich voice. Her beauty has been debated, but it’s clear she had a host of responsibilities as empress of Egypt, including commanding the army and navy, dispensing justice, setting prices, distributing grain, collecting taxes, dealing with foreign powers, building temples, and acting as high priestess. Everyone answered to her. She was the first to introduce coins of different denominations to her populace and was known to be a prankster with a cunning wit.
She was also smart. According to Plutarch, she spoke nine languages, including Greek, Latin, Hebrew, Troglodyte (Ethiopian) and she was the first Ptolemaic ruler to learn the Egyptian language.
Her city, Alexandria, was ahead of its time. It had automatic doors and hydraulic lifts, hidden treadmills, and even some coin-operated machines. Magnets, wires, pulleys, and other mechanical innovations delighted its citizens.
Calendars don't get a lot of play in the novel, but are interesting nonetheless. When Julius Caesar conquered Egypt, he realized Cleopatra's country was way ahead of Rome when it came to tracking the seasons. Before the emperor returned to Italy, he met with an Egyptian astronomer and learned a few secrets, naming the month of July after himself. After Octavian defeated Cleopatra and Marc Antony, and the lovers killed themselves, Octavian renamed himself Augustus Caesar, and following in his great-uncle's footsteps, named the eighth month of the year for himself, perhaps to celebrate his victory over the suicidal pair.
The novel is based on the premise that Cleopatra hid a dangerous treasure before killing herself. What type of treasure is dangerous, you ask? Enter one of these contests to find out!
Royal secrets. Epic lies. This "dangerous" and controversial standalone thriller from international bestselling VanOps author Avanti Centrae is a fast-paced bombshell of a story about truth and courage.
Born a goddess, Cleopatra died a prisoner. But the cobra's deadly kiss was just the beginning...
