Crocuses, chaos, and old school buildings

Hello from Siegen!

I hope you're well, and that spring is in the air where you live. I mean that.

I found some lovely crocuses in the garden behind my house just last week, despite the severe flooding we had during a storm the week before that. We may now have a moat around the house, but I've always wanted to be the Lady of a castle... ;)

It's good to be reminded that nature always finds a way to let the color back in.

Speaking of color - in between one thing and another, I've been putting some more research into the novel I'm currently working on.

I've been looking at old school buildings in Ireland that were in use in the 1920s. Kind of went down a rabbit hole on that one... Being a teacher in 2022, I find all this quite fascinating. I currently teach in a school building that was built in 1902 and hasn't really been modernized since! We still don't have sockets, or maybe just one, in every room, and some of the sinks and faucets are still original (and broken). Goes to show how education in my home country is being taken seriously... ;)

Anyway, here's a link to a website that shows some of the now abandoned Irish schoolhouses, if you're interested in checking it out. It leads to the blogsite of author Enda O'Flaherty, who did great research, took some awesome photographs, and published a book The Deserted Schoolhouses of Ireland on Collins Press.

Deserted schoolhouses in Ireland

Are there any old schoolhouses near where you live? Did you ever go exploring there?

Drop me a line and let me know, if you like.

Best wishes - talk soon,

Lisa Hofmann
