I lean up against the counter and wait for the bartender to approach. A body presses next to mine, causing me to look over at who doesn’t seem to understand the meaning of personal space. I’m about to tell them that they don’t need to be so damn close when my words—and it seems my brains—get trapped in outer-fucking-space.

Sandy-blonde hair that looks like it’s had his fingers tousled through it all day, a five o’clock shadow on a strong, chiseled jawline. A slightly crooked nose and a pair of the bluest eyes I’ve ever seen staring back at me.

And then he smiles. If I had any brain cells left, I just lost them. Along with my ability to speak. 

“Hey, I’m Axe,” he says with a thick accent that’s so far away from Seattle I can’t actually place it. I look down and see that he’s actually holding out a hand. It would be rude to not return the gesture, right?

Placing my palm in his, I try not to jump at the sensation of lightning bolts that zaps through me. “I’m Amalia,” I say, finally finding my voice.

“Amalia, huh. Suits you. What are you drinking, Amalia?”
