Just a couple of things...
First things first, the next Pickleville book comes out on March 11th and I wanted to send you an exclusive excerpt.
Note: This isn't the final edited version of this scene so there may be a few grammar errors.
Excerpt:
Jackson pulled up in front of Travis and Jaron’s house. He knew the main house had more room, and Mama Heath loved having him. He’d just always picked Travis. Travis had passed the friend stage and had gone straight into brother territory. He needed someone around him who he had an extensive history with and who still remembered shit.
He had his bag slung over his shoulder when he entered through the French doors. “Honey,
I’m home.”
“Upstairs.” Jaron yelled down.
Jackson knew enough about how into each other Jaron and Travis were. The last thing he wanted was catch his best friends fucking, so he stood at the bottom of the stairs as he said, “Are you decent?”
“Yep. Changing bedding in Carter’s room.” Jaron popped his head out of the doorway with a grin. His eyes were wide, and he made a face as if something shocked him. “Found a dirty magazine under his mattress.”
“Cliché. He should have hid it better. Or watch porn on the internet.” Who had magazines anymore?
Jackson grinned and headed up the stairs. Since no one was naked except for the people in said magazine, he felt it was safe to put his bag in the spare room.
Jaron’s expression turned incredulous. “That is not the point.”
“Then what is?” Jackson had had dirty magazines when he was a kid, too. They’d still be in the attic where he’d stashed them, but his dad had caught him going up there one day. Jackson had been twelve or thirteen. There hadn’t been anything interesting for a teenager in the attic. Or that was what Dad had said when he’d interrogated Jackson in the upstairs hallway. Jackson could only lie for so long before the truth caught up with him.
“What should I do about it?” Jaron had a ball of sheets in his arms, and he bit his lip.
Jackson raised his eyebrows and grinned. “Well, first, I think we should look at them. See what’s what.”
Jaron threw the sheets at him.
Jackson stepped back and chuckled. “I’m perfectly serious. I’ll help you out by assessing them myself.”
“I’m sure. Perv.”
“I’m not the one with the dirty magazine.” Jackson wiggled his eyebrows. “How kinky is the kid, anyway?”
Jaron laughed and did a jazz-hands thing. “Oh my god, shut up. And also, ew.”
Jaron picked up the sheets again and then carried them to the laundry room. Jackson followed him because that was in the same direction as the spare room.
“My dad confiscated them. And then had a conversation with me about how sometimes seeing stuff as kid isn’t good for my development. He also said if I had questions about sex and different body types, I should ask him. Not consult media such as magazines, or my friends. ‘Your friends don’t know shit about anything. They’re little hornball idiots same as you.” Pretty much that had been the conversation, almost verbatim. Jackson was pretty sure he even got his dad’s tone right.
“Hm.” Jaron contemplated the James Bartlett Parenting method before questioning Jackson again. “So he didn’t make a big deal out of it?”
“Not really. But my dad wasn’t one for that. He was the type who wanted to have a conversation.” He was always like that until he couldn’t remember what words were.
“Did you get grounded?”
“No.”
Jaron smiled. “Thanks, Jackson.”
“Sure. Glad it helped.” He wished he could have a conversation with his father again. He’d give anything for an hour of coherency. Just one hour. But he wouldn’t get it. It didn’t matter what he gave up.
