Hi ,

Today, we honour the life and legacy of Koyo Kouoh, a visionary curator, cultural leader, and tireless advocate for African and diasporic art. Her sudden passing at the age of 58 leaves a profound void in the global art community.

Here are a few things you should know about HER...

Koyo was born in Douala, Cameroon, and raised in Switzerland,

She began her professional journey in banking before transitioning to the arts, where she found her true calling.

In 2008, she founded RAW Material Company in Dakar, Senegal. A center dedicated to art, knowledge, and society, fostering critical discourse and supporting contemporary artists.

Koyo's influence extended globally. She served on curatorial teams for documenta 12 (2007) and documenta 13*(2012), and was the curator for still (the) Barbarians at the 37th EVA International Biennial in Ireland.

Also, in December 2024, she was appointed as the Artistic Director of the 2026 Venice Biennale, making history as the first African woman to hold this prestigious position.

Koyo believed in the power of art as a space for reflection and transformation. She once said, "If we can imagine the ideal, that means it's possible."

Her commitment to centering African narratives and challenging Eurocentric perspectives reshaped the global art landscape.

Beyond her professional achievements, Koyo was a mentor, a friend, and an inspiration to many. Her passion, intellect, and unwavering dedication to the arts will continue to inspire future generations.

Rest in power, Koyo Kouoh. Your legacy lives on in the artists you've uplifted, the institutions you've transformed, and the countless lives you've touched.

Blessing from Atsur.
