Letters from Mannavanoor

Dear Friend,
Mercury in Taurus last week and although I drafted this last week, I am only now getting around to sending it. I have been traveling recently to step away from some turbulence and to clear my head. It is my pleasure to share a photograph from Mannavanoor, a secluded village in the Nilgiri Mountains of southern India.
Vāk in Sanskrit refers to the principle of truth expressed through speech, and Mercury’s significations can be understood through this Ṛgvedic idea. In the Puruṣa Sūkta of the Rigveda, the mouth is identified with the Brāhmaṇa, which can be associated with Dharma. Here, Brāhmaṇa points to the power of the spoken word, the force that arises through what is uttered.
In the Ṛgvedic tradition, knowledge moved through the spoken word. It was carried from one person to another through listening and repetition. What one person said became the basis of what another understood, and this formed the foundation of knowledge transmission. Today, this is called the “oral tradition”. Because of this, there was a need for great care in speech. Words do not reach everyone in the same way. The listener receives them through their own understanding, and when the intended meaning is not conveyed, the distortion begins. Gradually, the word can lose its authenticity. When it reaches clearly and as intended, it carries truth, and the strength of that truth is immense. The Puruṣa Sūkta places the mouth in that role, as something through which Dharma is upheld in the world.
Mercury reflects this idea of Vāk and becomes responsible for speech and communication. When Mercury enters Taurus, a fixed sign, there is a strong emphasis on the words we speak, especially in matters of family and finance. Words tend to carry weight during this time. Taurus gives them steadiness, and what is said can remain for a long time. There is value in being mindful and intentional with speech, both in personal and public spaces, as the impact of words can unfold over time depending on the situations we are in.
Mercury’s transit also brings attention to practical thinking around money in the short term. It supports making simple and logical adjustments. In my own case, most of my work happens from home through writing, teaching, and consultations. I rarely use mobile internet. Moving to a minimal monthly plan instead of continuing with an expensive annual one reduced a chunk of that expense. It is a small decision, yet very much aligned with Mercury in Taurus. Observing such choices and reflecting on them after Mercury leaves Taurus can give a clearer sense of how we navigated this period.
Mercury also has this lighter, playful quality that can feel natural within the domestic environment. This can be a good time to spend with family, to sit together, to enjoy conversations, or to take children out for something simple over the weekend. These moments tend to stay in meaningful ways.
Mercury is in Taurus while Venus is in Gemini, and the two are in mutual exchange. This can bring a gentle sense of ease into daily interactions. Enjoying time with friends, reconnecting, and having meaningful conversations can feel fulfilling. The inclination towards old connections comes from Mercury’s square to the nodes of the Moon, which potentially brings something from the past back into focus.
Venus in Gemini supports communication and helps create a more peaceful way of relating, while also bringing awareness to the realities within relationships which cannot be limited to romantic relationships. Venus in Ārdrā Nakṣatra can bring a stirring quality. Some misunderstandings may come to the surface which opens up space for clarity. This can lead to a strengthening of relationships or a decision to move away from what is no longer working. There is a natural process here of recognising what still belongs and what does not align anymore.
I am looking to close the enrollment for my batch 3 diploma in Indian astrology and I am taking the final round of people before the classes begin on June 14. If you have been thinking of learning Indian astrology, I would indeed be happy to welcome you. Here is a clipping of Philosophy class from batch 1 in July 2025.
Have a lovely weekend.
Love,
Aswin
