Hey, . Welcome to the monthly version of the Artificialis newsletter!

A summary of what happened during the month, the best blogs of our Medium publication, latest news of our Discord server events, and recent news in the world of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning!

If you'd like to fuel my efforts, coffee donations are gratefully accepted here: https://ko-fi.com/artificialis

So sit back, take a cup of coffee, let's go over what happened this month.

A little bit from me and the server:

I'm going to write a blog series.

I'm trying to fully get back at writing and I'm starting things off with a series about my two main worlds: Deep Learning & Audio. I'll go over what's audio, its fundamentals and how you can process it. I'll then continue with spectrograms, linear and mel scales, how to perform augmentations on it, and much more.

You can follow the process on my Twitter and my Medium blog.

AI in the world

  • Google created SynthID, an undetectable watermark technology that identifies computer-generated photos to combat misrepresentation. The program embeds watermarks in photographs and can recognize AI-generated images in incoming images.
  • The US military is rapidly adopting AI to develop swarms of cheap autonomous systems to counter military advancements by other countries, with a focus on defensive applications like an AI-enabled airspace monitoring system.
  • The UAE's Technology Innovation Institute has launched Falcon 180B, an advanced AI model with 180 billion parameters, offered as open access for research and commercial use, outperforming competitors like Meta's LLaMA 2, ranking just below OpenAI's GPT-4, and on par with Google's PaLM 2 Large.
  • OpenAI has introduced DALL·E 3, an improved version of its image-generating AI system. DALL·E 3 can create more accurate and detailed images based on specific prompts, and it is designed to decline requests for violent or hateful content. Also: it’s integrated into ChatGPT!
  • Meta introduced new AI experiences that enhance connection and creativity. Users can now generate customized stickers, transform images with new features like Restyle and Backdrop, and interact with Meta AI, a personalized assistant available on messaging platforms and smart glasses.
  • ChatGPT can now see, hear and speak - OpenAI is beginning to roll out new voice and image capabilities for ChatGPT plus users

Tip of the month

43 machine learning rules and best practices for ML Engineers by Google

Do machine learning like the great engineer you are, not like the great machine learning expert you aren’t.

That is a quote from the awesome article by Google Developers that outlines 43 machine learning rules and best practices. Among the 43, there are great advice like:

  1. You don’t always have to use machine learning.
  2. Watch for silent failures (and what they are).
  3. Design and implement the metrics before the models.
  4. You first model should be stupidly simple like LogReg or LinReg
