Down to Business: When Quitting is the Smartest Move

January 19th was Quitter’s Day—the day most people abandon their New Year’s resolutions. Sounds like failure, right?

But what if quitting wasn’t about giving up, but about moving forward smarter?

Seth Godin’s book The Dip breaks it down:

Not all quitting is bad. Some quitting is necessary.

The trick is knowing the difference between quitting because it’s hard (which is usually a mistake) and quitting because it’s a dead end (which is smart).

The Dip vs. The Cul-de-Sac

Think of your goals like two paths:

🔹 The Dip – Every worthwhile pursuit has a tough phase, where things get frustrating, slow, and painful. Most people quit here. But if you push through, there's a big reward waiting on the other side.

Example: You start a business, and at first, it's exciting. Then you hit slow sales, self-doubt, and long nights. This is The Dip. If the business has real potential, pushing through leads to success. Quitting here is a mistake.

🔹 The Cul-de-Sac (Dead End) – Some things will never get better, no matter how much effort you put in. If you’re stuck in a dead end, quitting is the best move so you can focus on something better.

Example: You’re in a job you hate. You’re not learning, growing, or progressing. You keep hoping it will get better, but it won’t. This is a Cul-de-Sac. Quitting here is smart because it frees you for something more meaningful.

When to Quit (and When to Push Through)?

  • Are you in a Dip or a Dead End? If there's a light at the end of the tunnel, keep going. If it's just more of the same, move on.
  • Is this worth the struggle? Some things are worth the fight. Others aren’t. Be honest with yourself.
  • What’s the opportunity cost? Sticking with the wrong thing means missing out on something better.

Quitting isn't failure—it’s making room for success.

You can quote me on this:

"Quitting Isn’t Losing—It’s Winning Smarter."

Have you ever quit something and realised it was the best decision ever?
