Happy National Pumpkin Spice Day! (and Pumpkin Pie Spice Day)
My Mom is crazy for pumpkin spice, but still calls it "Pumpkin Pie Coffee." She's old-school with the pumpkin spice. She says, "I loved Pumpkin Pie Coffee before the kids made it popular in the 90s." (You know, those "kids" who are now in their 40s and 50s... ahhhh, Mom.)
Pumpkin Pie Coffee Spice in a Jar
4 teaspoons Ground Cinnamon
2 teaspoons Ground Ginger
1 teaspoon Ground Cloves
½ teaspoon Ground Nutmeg
optional: 1 teaspoon Allspice or ½ teaspoon Ground Cardamom
The optional ingredients here are "if you have it, add it" according to Mom. She said you should grind them, but I've made it with store-bought ground spices and it is delicious.
Make it in a jar that can seal up air tight and it will last a while but it never lasts more than a week at my office. Then stir in as much as you like into your morning brew. I also like to add a touch of honey or maple syrup but my Mom said I'm sweet enough without it. She's the one who's sweet!
My local barista blends some pumpkin puree into the cream and adds the Pumpkin Pie Spice, and then steams it all together to make a latte with a couple shots of espresso. It's like drinking autumn dreams.
