A Valentine's Treat from Poppy & Dom...

“Hadn’t you best get home?” Rose flicks her eyes at the clock in the kitchen. “It’s almost seven.” She pulls a bottle of red wine from the under-counter cooler.

I shrug a shoulder. “Poppy knows I’m working.”

Dan walks in behind me and drops his car keys into the dish on the work surface. “There’s fiore mio.” He cups her face and presses his lips to hers. I look away and check my phone. A message from Poppy.

Text: I have something exciting to tell you.

My stomach flips as if I’m on a rollercoaster. The last year’s certainly had its ups and downs, but the dance studio we built recently has kept her busy and her mind off other things.

“Everything all right?” Dan says, with his arms still wrapped around Rose.

“Yeah. Poppy said she has some news.” I can’t stop the smile from spreading across my face, hoping it’s the news we’ve both prayed for.

“Oh Dom.” Rose steps out of Dan’s embrace and throws her arms around my neck. “Tell her to call me. We want all the details.”

I shove my phone in my pocket and nod. “I’d best go.”

“You know it’s Valentine’s, don’t you?” Dan shouts as I click the handle on the door.

“Shit. Thanks for reminding me.”

“Poppy, I’m home.” I walk into the cabin, laden with gifts. Poppies aren’t available to buy in February, so a bunch of red roses will have to do. “Red?” I place the bags of shopping on the worktop along with the bunch of flowers and go in search of my little fox.

Excitement bubbles in my stomach as I walk down the wooden hall of the cabin to our bedroom, wondering if she’s waiting for me in our bed, wearing her red lace set, her red hair splayed out on my pillow.

I push the door open to the bedroom, but she’s not there. “Poppy,” I shout, my heart rate picking up the pace...

For all my Galentines...

I actually don't celebrate this holiday. Growing up as the fat girl in school, Valentine's Day was always a reminder that I was the only one of my friends who didn't have a BF. But I soon realised that book boyfriends do it better anyway.

Now married, I choose not to celebrate, we don't buy gifts and we don't do anything extra special. My husband treats me like a queen every single day of the year by cooking and cleaning and supporting me and our kids. So Valentine's is just another day for me that can sometimes be triggering.

It's only now that I'm a romance author that it's even on my radar and I felt I couldn't keep quiet in case there are others out there who are triggered or alone and feeling a bit meh. You're not alone.

To make things worse this weekend, I'm full of cold and flu. But this week we've been pre occupied with our daughter's dance show every night. Tonight is her final show and then we can all relax.

I'm 20% into Dan and Rose's story and loving how it's all coming together.

One thing I am looking forward to tonight is watching Gladiators (not sure if you get this outside of the UK, but Giant. omg that man.) I bet he could lift me with one arm. You can find his IG @akathegiant if anyone wants to stalk and become totally obsessed with him like me lol
