Greetings dear Chroniclers,

What are your favorite foods for December? I'd love to hear! Feel free to share by responding to this email or sharing in my question of the week response form.

I think of comforting tea, hot cocoa, hearty soups, my favorite cake (for my birthday), and Christmas cookies. Baking is one of my favorite seasonal activities. And so I'll share a recipe today. :D

Aunt Phyllis' Crumb Cake

Since it's my birthday month, I'll share the recipe for the cake I always ask hubs to make. It's a dense chocolate chip cake. Super yummy!

Ingredients

*2 c flour

*1 c sugar

*2/3 c shortening

1 egg

1 t baking soda

1 t cinnamon

1 c milk (non-dairy milks can be used)

12 oz of chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour 9x13 pan.

Mix the *(first 3 ingredients) together until the mixture is like cake crumbs. Save 1 cup and set it aside. Add the rest to the mixing bowl.

Add the remaining ingredients (except the chocolate chips) and mix until smooth. Fold in most of the chocolate chips.

Pour into greased and floured pan. Sprinkle the top with the crumb mixture you set aside. Sprinkle the remaining chocolate chips on top.

Bake for 1/2 hour (or until toothpick comes out with no dough).

Let cool and serve. Goes well with vanilla ice cream.

Story Snippet

During the Game of Tomes (a house-based writing game) opening stream, my friend Nat and I challenged viewers to create VSSes (very short story snippets - about the length of a social media post). We had a blast. I'll share one of my favorites for a duo I haven't been able to write much for, just hinted at.

As Kazuo waited for his partner to finish typing, he nudged Hiro. "What plans are you making now?"

Hiro smirked. "Bad decisions, as always."

"Aw, shit. What are you getting us into now?" Kazuo smacked Hiro upside the head, albeit lightly.

Hiro grinned. "Gonna teach my little brother how to be one of the best extortionists in the business."

My heart sank. His damned little brother was usurping Hiro's attention.

Obligatory Ferret

The weather was perfect for ferrets, so we got them out to the park for a pleasant change of pace for playtime. Mochi was happy to burrow into the leaves. As best I can tell, Pocky liked the crunch sounds.
