Weakening to unlock the strength to change

This rings true of Maya Angelou's famous quote: "When you know better, do better!" Stop holding on to safety and change your mind and your ways. That's where the future is!
I have a lot to say about change. Many years ago I decided to take the Prosci ADKAR Change Management training and it enlightened me to the way humans approach change.
Fast forward to today and I recognize that as the PMBOK guide continues to iterate, change management finds itself evermore in the forefront. I don’t think it was ever neglected in the profession; I just believe we have matured to integrate it across all of our domains and principles.
But, I am fascinated by the polarizing conversations around strength and weakness in our current professional climate. If you are listening at all to the thought leaders in our profession, you are hearing a reversal of conventional thinking around strength. It turns out that true strength comes from appearing weak; so many of the hard skills we’ve been indoctrinated to believe are most important are failing us when times get tough.
I recently heard Gary Vee talk about soft skills and he is flipping the script on the value of professional skills. He talks about the fact that the hard skills do matter BUT they are not sufficient to succeed. It’s EQ and the soft skills that actually make all the difference.
We change because we know better and use that knowledge to make wiser decisions. The idea that our strength all along was not in what we KNEW but in what we were willing to learn from. That is strength: admitting there is more to learn and weakening yourself just enough to unlock the strength to change!
Happy Changing,
Amber (aka The Feisty PM)
