Felicia Mitchell's Poems Explore the Dementia Experience
Apr 11, 2023 8:04 pm
Hello ,
April is one of my favorite months because of the perfect weather we seem to get here in North Carolina after the on-again, off-again glimpses of spring throughout March. The earth comes alive again as dogwoods burst into bloom and wildflowers raise their heads. With so much beauty abounding, is it any wonder that April is also National Poetry Month! We hope you'll join us for our special event on April 18th, "Poetry for the Dementia Journey, an AlzAuthors Virtual Q&A."
As a poet myself, I can attest to the power of poetry in my own caregiving experience. Both reading and writing poems helped orient my vision to a higher plane. Instead of being stuck wading through layers of grief, poetry opened my eyes to how pain and beauty are often connected. Without one, we miss the other. We are excited to welcome a wide range of poets and poetry lovers on April 18th. You won't want to miss it.

During National Poetry Month, it's my delight to introduce you to Felicia Mitchell, poet, writer and retired professor of English and creative writing. Her collection of poetry is beautiful a tribute to her mother and a powerful exploration of the dementia experience.
Felicia shares:
"To salvage stories, I began documenting my motherβs life more frequently in poems and journal entries. Documenting the old and new helped me to negotiate complicated emotions and chaotic days, as well as sweet moments. It helped me to remember my mother and to validate the woman she was becoming. The poems in A Mother Speaks, A Daughter Listens: Journeying Together Through Dementia, both memoir and elegy, evolved from this process."

Please join us for a virtual celebration of poetry for the dementia journey on Tuesday, April 18th at 2 pm EST on Zoom. A community of poets who have all written poetry on their caregiver journeys will gather to share their poems and stories. We will find solace in shared stories, as well as comfort and grace.
