A Cookbook for Caregivers from Occupational Therapist Melissa Bernstein
Mar 08, 2023 12:31 am
Hello ,
We've been waiting for Melissa Bernstein's post to launch for months now and it's a good one! Melissa is an occupational therapist and offers you a cookbook to not only help you provide healthy meals made from wholesome ingredients, but to also enlist the help of your loved one in the kitchen if they are able. Planning, preparing, and making meals together is a great way to pass the time, include your loved one in decision making, and keep them engaged. I hope Melissa's book brings you not only good eating but joy. Don't forget to enter this week's Reader Raffle: Our question is about cooking. I'm sure we all have mixed feelings on that subject.

Our Latest Author
Occupational therapist Melissa Bernstein, along with her husband, retired neurologist David Bernstein, has created a program for healthy living called "The Power of 5." To supplement the activities presented in the program and book by the same name, Melissa, a certified vegan chef, created "The Power of 5 Test Kitchen Cookbook: Caregiver Edition." Her methods make cooking a shared activity caregivers and their loved ones can enjoy together.
Melissa writes:
A cooking activity allows for time to reminisce about past meals or recipe preparation with other family members or from childhood. This time may facilitate questions and invoke conversation about special moments with family and friends, bringing memories back to life.

Susan J. Farese, MSN, RN is the author of Poetic Expressions in Nursing: Sharing the Caring, poems written when she became a nurse poet in the 1990's. Heartbreaking memories of losing her grandmother, Ann, to early onset Alzheimer's when she was a young teen inspired her first poem, Ann's Zest Ends. In this episode, we discuss how witnessing her grandmother's decline as a child profoundly impacted her even 50 years later, why a chance scene in a movie inspired her to start writing poetry, and the value of poetry as expression for nurses and caregivers.
Please note: The podcast will be on hiatus after 3/15 until further notice.
