Dear AlzAuthor,

We celebrate our anniversary in June, and this year it's our seventh! When we started on this journey to elevate the works of authors writing about Alzheimer's and dementia from personal experience, we thought it would last one month. No one was more surprised than we were at our success. And we keep growing. This month we're celebrating with a few special events as well as a month of podcasts and new books and authors. In July, we're taking a bit of a break and tweaking our format, but we will still be bringing you quality resources for your dementia journey. We thank you for your loyalty and dedication in following us and supporting our mission. We look forward to a new year of programming and surprises. As always, Marianne

Introducing our latest author: Susan Ostrowski

image

Susan Ostrowski is a speech language pathologist with a degree in remedial reading. When encountering residents of a nursing facility who were both "simultaneously over-stimulated and under-stimulated," she vowed to do something to improve the quality of their lives, and took on the task of finding a way to allow them to continue their love of reading.

She writes:

Mr. S shared that reading was one of the things he missed most. And so we began, with Mr. S in the lead, to find his barriers to reading and to identify ways to get around those barriers. Through trial and error, we experimented with modifications to an article, making sure to retain the article’s integrity and intelligence. Eventually, it worked! With our applied text adaptations, Mr. S. was able to read the article comfortably, and to talk enthusiastically about what he read. I asked him if he would like me to share this with his family so that they could produce more accessible articles for him. He said, β€œYes…I feel saved.”

As we celebrate seven years of sharing dementia stories written from personal experience to support others, members of our management team reflect on where we've been, where we're going, and what AlzAuthors means to each of us on a deeply personal level. We are extremely proud of our accomplishments, in awe that we've managed to keep what was initially a one month project chugging along for seven years, and inspired by the ideas, partnerships, and opportunities that motivate and inspire us to continue this mission. We are grateful to you, our authors, who make all of it not only possible but worth every minute. Thank you for joining us on this journey. Please stick around to see what's next. To hear our story in our own voices please tune into our podcast episode 65: Untangling Seven Years of AlzAuthors

Our third annual Summer Book Series with HFC kicks off June 12th!

image

We are once again partnering with HFC to present a Summer Book Series for Alzheimer’s and dementia families and caregivers. This program is open to anyone interested in learning about these conditions. Each month one of our authors will meet with readers and caregivers online to discuss their book. Christy Byrne Yates, MS will moderate. The authors will talk about their own dementia journeys and why they chose to write about them and will answer questions at the end. Short on time and can't read the book? Come anyway. This is a wonderful way to learn more about dementia and caregiving. All participants must pre-register to reserve their seat. There is no cost.
