Christiana Egi shares her children's book about Alzheimer's, "A Rose For Grandma"
May 04, 2022 2:51 pm
Dear AlzAuthor,
As a caregiver, you have learned to make choices and do things you never imagined you could do, so in case no one has told you today . . .
๐ ๐ ๐
Introducing our Latest Author
This week, we welcome Christiana Egi, a mother, grandmother, Registered Nurse, Diabetic Educator, Registered Natural Health Nutritionist, and Geriatric and Mental Health Specialist.
She has spent ten years of her 34-year career in nursing working in the crisis unit of Canadaโs largest Psychiatric Hospital. For the last 22 years, she has worked as the owner and operator of Alexis Lodge Retirement Facilities in Toronto, Canada.
Christiana tells us: I wrote my book, A Rose For Grandma: A Journey Through Alzheimerโs to increase awareness and demystify Alzheimerโs disease.
. . . In the book, the reader learns about Annie and her familyโs experience as they support her grandmother through the disease.
. . . I decided to tell this story through the eyes of a child to make it less threatening, more accessible, and more impactful. I also think itโs important to discuss the often-overlooked impact that having a loved one with dementia has on children.

On the Podcast: Patti Davis Untangles Lessons Learned while Floating in Dementia's Deep End
Patti Davis is an actress, author, activist, advocate, and daughter of a United States president. She has written extensively about her father, Ronald Reagan, and his Alzheimerโs disease in both The Long Goodbye and now Floating in the Deep End. In 2011, she created a support group program for caregivers of people with dementia, called Beyond Alzheimerโs. Floating in the Deep End is an extension of that support group โ a handbook for those on the perilous and sorrowful journey of losing a loved one to this mysterious disease. It is also part memoir, as many of the memories of her own dementia journey have taken on a different resonance with time and reflection. She hopes caregivers and readers find guidance and comfort in this book.
In this episode we discuss both the challenges and comforts of living your Alzheimerโs journey in full view of the world, her approach to building caregiver support groups, and the lessons and gifts that can be found in dementia care.

AlzAuthors Founders on AlzSpeaks Radio
Jean Lee, Vicki Tapia, and Marianne Sciucco were thrilled to be invited to speak with Lori La Bey on AlzSpeaks Radio about what's new with AlzAuthors. We talked about how far we've come and our plans for our 7th anniversary coming up in June (and we thought this was going to be a one month gig).

We're Now on The Health Podcast Network
Untangling Alzheimer's and Dementia, an AlzAuthors Podcast is now part of the Health Podcast Network, the place to discover, hear, and share creative, engaging podcasts on health, care, and well-being. We're also working with them on the creation of a mini-series on Alzheimer's and dementia. Many of our authors are participating. We're happy to be considered a resource for expertise in all dementia matters, and to provide podcasters and others connections to those who have shared their Alzheimer's and dementia stories. The mini-series will air in June.

A long-time dream coming true...
In the words of John Denver,
All our bags are packed
We're ready to go...
Tomorrow, we deliver our 3rd Custom Caregiver Collection
to an Alzheimer's Association Support Group
which meets monthly at Soprema Senior Center in Wadsworth, Ohio.
For years we've wanted to find a way to get physical books into the hands of those who need them: caregivers and others concerned with dementia. With our tiny team of volunteers this seemed like a long shot. But our dream is coming true! We are now offering
real books
to real people
in real places
through Custom Caregiver Collections
Our initial goal is to test 10 of these collections in 10 locations throughout the U.S.
We owe a debt of gratitude to five special people who made this dream come true:
- author Paulette Sharkey for her generous donation to launch this project
- author and manager Susan Landeis and her husband, Randy, for the craftsmanship of these lovely table-top shelves which hold 15-20 books
- management team members Jean Lee and Ann Campanella who wouldn't let go of this dream.
Stay tuned as we bring you news about how you can become involved in this new initiative.
