One of the eagles at St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge was cooperative today. This eagle was perched close to the nest designated WK019, close to Headquarter's Pond. I was lucky today: he was the only eagle I observed and was perched at the top of a tree. Within a few minutes, he flew west providing a beautiful view of his wings. #Eagles #Wakulla #StMarksRefuge #northflorida

This blue heron was about to take flight at the Lighthouse Pool at the #StMarksWildlifeRefuge. The sun seemed to fall on him just right.

For the past month or so I've been testing higher shutter speed - 1/2300s and faster - in conjunction with an electronic front-shutter curtain. The Black Skimmers were a great way to test this. In groups of five or more, they'll fly back and forth along a body of water skimming the water with their beaks and catching minnows swimming near the surface. This was at the Lighthouse Pool at the #StMarksLighthouse.

My favorite raptor - the American Bald Eagle. This one is part of a pair close to the Lighthouse Pool at the St. Marks Refuge. It seems their nest was blown down in a recent storm and they'll spend part of their day perched in the trees. #stmarkswildliferserve #Eagles

A pelican flying just above the water at the St. Marks Wildlife Refuge. Of all the various birds I saw the past two days, this was the only pelican.

In the years I've been visiting the #StMarksRefuge I don't think I've previously encountered an #alligator this large. I was taken aback by the sheer size. He was camped out along the shoreline at the Stoney Bayou Pool. #Wakulla #Florida

This morning I ventured out to the St. Marks Wildlife Refuge and came across an eagle's nest just off Lighthouse Road. I pulled out my camera and stood there for the better part of an hour shooting away. I think tomorrow I'll get up early and go out there at sunrise to catch their early morning routine. #stmarksrefuge #wakulla #birdsofnorthflorida #eagles
