Vending in a heatwave

Plus a new episode on inspiration

image

Salaam alaikum warahamtullah wabraktu (peace ladies!)

How are you today? I'm in New York and this weekend we had a huge heatwave. I was in a bit of a dilemma because I had booked a table to vend some books I have edited and written at the NYCMC Eid Carnival and was so close to opting out. Then I had a little nudge- a bout of inspiration (you'll see why that's relevant to todays episode) The inspiration was: Just go. Just show. So in 90 degrees of humid air with a possible thunderstorm approaching, I decided to take my girls and drag my husband with me to vend.

At first I felt this fatigue and hardly anyone was showing up. I decided to go inside the building and have a lovely cup of coffee and relax and found that in the lounge I was in, a whole bunch of the books I had first edited were in a pile, in the relaxing area. These books were Poetic Justice.

Then I went back to my stall (pictured below) and sat down waiting for people to arrive at the event. A friend of my husband came to the table and started chatting to my husband and left a cup of Indonesian beverage for my girls and I- I don't know the name but it was a pink milk drink with avocado pieces inside and lots of ice. A small act of kindness. And I began to feel a shift in myself. An opening. A excitement for the day. A hope.

Through the day, the books of Poetic Justice and The Woke Writer were our biggest sale points and I was surprised that on such a hot day, so many people came by and showed their support.

Why do I tell you this? I learnt a huge lesson on that day. Sometimes we can feel a certain way but feelings change- naturally many times in one day, and sometimes those feelings are happy, and a lot of the times they're aren't.

But they can change.

And I really needed to be reminded of that. A lot of the things I share are trauma related and that's because of my own experiences and sometimes things- like our feelings don't make sense. They just don't. But with the help of Allah which is always near, even if we can't see it at the time, and with the intention of doing the right thing, in our best capacity, the world can shift- even just a little bit and so many beautiful things can happen.

In today's video, I'm diving into three powerful sources of inspiration: nightly dreams, insightful people, and unexpected openings. Each holds the potential for divine guidance and in the episode, I will explain some signs of each and how they can be used in your life.
