Hello ,

Shelley and I take turns editing this weekly newsletter. It's my turn this week, and it means I have to review all the content before adding it to the newsletter - including the blog post Shelley writes every week.

Each week, she puts her heart into what she writes, and, like it's supposed to, it makes me think about what I can do to improve my well-being. I thought I'd share my thoughts with you.

Having a healthy body, mind, and spirit is crucial to living a fulfilling and happy life. Here are a few reasons why:

  1. Physical Health: A healthy body is essential for performing daily tasks, such as work, exercise, and taking care of oneself. A healthy body also helps to prevent chronic diseases, which can be debilitating and costly.
  2. Mental Health: A healthy mind allows us to think clearly, process emotions, and cope with stress. Good mental health enables us to form healthy relationships and make sound decisions.
  3. Spiritual Health: Spiritual health helps us to find meaning and purpose in life. It can provide a sense of inner peace and calm, even in the face of difficult situations.

Overall, taking care of our body, mind, and spirit is important for our overall well-being and quality of life. It helps us to function at our best, and to be present and engaged in our lives and relationships.

Build Resilience and Overcome Challenges: The Power of Consistent Habits

by Shelley Carney

“Is this seat taken?”

I smile and shake my head, gesturing that the chair is available.

I’m sitting at a long table where people are resting or eating lunch, waiting with our cameras and shopping bags for Toby to finish taking photos of the gem and jewelry booths set up around the Creative Arts building at the New Mexico Expo Fairgrounds.

The elderly man helps his wife to sit comfortably, then heads off to continue shopping at the Albuquerque Gem and Mineral Show. They are both wearing masks and the woman is wearing a light blue knitted cap.

I’ve been around cancer patients enough lately to recognize the signs.

She and I talk a bit while she rests.

“It’s good you’re still getting out,” I tell her.

She agrees. "I believe it's important to get out, especially when you're living on borrowed time."

I think about my husband sitting at home, sleeping in the recliner in front of the television. He doesn’t have the energy right now for anything besides doctor’s appointments.

But seeing this couple getting out of the house together to enjoy a hobby and be around people gives me hope.

The Wellness Benefits of the Great Outdoors

by Andrew Avitt

With spring approaching and cabin fever at an all-time high, we can now look forward to the many wellness benefits associated with getting outdoors.

"The physiological response to being outside in nature is real, and it's measurable," said Michelle Kondo, a research social scientist with the USDA Forest Service's Northern Research Station.

"There are many physical and psychological benefits of nature that scientists have observed, which can better help us understand how nature supports wellness in the body, mind and community."

1. Physical Wellness

Being outside in green spaces supports an active and healthy lifestyle, which has shown to increase life expectancy, improve sleep quality and reduce cancer risk.

“Many of the benefits afforded to us by green spaces partially results from more opportunities to be active,” said Kondo. “Being in outdoor green spaces can increase a person’s motivation, too.”

For example, some studies have shown that natural outdoor environments in urban spaces are more enticing for physical activity and are more likely to motivate people to exercise, leading to higher levels of fitness.

Studies also show that being outside in nature is relaxing, reducing our stress, cortisol levels, muscle tension and heart rates – all of which are risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

“Since scientists have gained access to data sets, sometimes capturing an entire country’s population of medical records and hospital data, we are finding that patient diagnoses and chronic illness risk are often related to where individual lives and their proximity to green spaces,” said Kondo. “And that’s a correlation that is likely to strengthen as we conduct more studies.”

Along with supporting physical wellness, nature also bolsters mental wellness in the individual...
