The sun is going down behind the hills, and the light begins to fade, turning the blue autumn sky orange, pink and gray.
When will we see the cranes fly in and land?
They show up, along with ducks and snow geese, in small flocks. They land slowly as they fly into the stiff wind to join their fellows in the flooded fields of the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge.
It's so windy that I've tied a kaffiyeh scarf over my head to keep my cap from blowing off and my ears covered.
It's so cold. I wear two shirts, a vest, a coat, and gloves. Sniffling, but stalwart, I stand on the Flight Deck with other photographers and bird watchers scanning the horizon for the arrival of more birds.
Toby and I want to get the video and photos to make a cinematic travel vlog for our YouTube channel, New Mexico Day Trips...

It was the end of a long day for us, having driven from Bernalillo and hoping to document in still and moving images the coordinated landing of tens of thousands of waterfowl. Although it was relatively sunny, the strong Southeast wind made for a cold and difficult day. And, now we were waiting for the grand finale, situated in the perfect spot with cameras ready to roll.
