Dear ,
Is it possible that June can feel like too much of a good thing?
Many families and teachers already know what this month looks like. The year end school calendar fills up in a way that can feel both exciting and exhausting at the same time.
Most people notice there is something in the air this time of year — a collective buzz, making summer plans, a quickening of pace, a sense that everything is happening all at once... right now!
And underneath all of that activity, some might notice something else: a restlessness at night, energy that spikes and then drops, a sense of being slightly off despite having every reason to feel well.
If that all sounds familiar, Chinese medicine has something to say about it.
Summer is the season of peak Yang energy in nature
In the Chinese medical calendar, summer belongs to the Fire element and the Heart organ system. Where spring was about rising energy and new beginnings, summer is the fullest expression of that energy — warm, expansive, outward-moving.
The summer solstice on June 21 marks the peak of Yang in the entire year. It is the longest day, the most light, the highest point of natural energy before it begins its slow, quiet turn.
Momentum increases, but there can be a feeling of urgency, too. The feeling is joyful, but it can also be a lot for the body to hold.
Why June can feel unsettled for some of us
Yang energy governs activity, warmth, and wakefulness. When it is at its peak, the body and mind can run hotter and faster than usual. For some people, this feels energizing.
But for others, it may show up as:
Difficulty falling or staying asleep, a mind that won't quiet down at night, bursts of energy followed by an unexplained crash, feeling more emotionally reactive than usual, or a low hum of restlessness. It can be hard to name.
By the way, none of this means something is "wrong". It means you are a person moving through a season — and your body is responding to how this feels.
A gentle word of caution
Here is something worth knowing: the solstice is still ahead of us. Whatever you are feeling now is likely to intensify as we move deeper into summer, because the Yang energy continues to build until June 21 before it begins to turn.
This is not something to be afraid of. But it is a good reason to pay attention now, before the heat of July and August arrives.
Chinese medicine teaches that working with the energy of the season is much easier than recovering from having pushed against it. Small adjustments made in early summer tend to carry people through the rest of the season with much more ease.
How acupuncture can help
Acupuncture is helpful at this time of year because it works with the body's existing energy rather than suppressing or forcing it. When Yang energy is running high, treatment can help calm the nervous system, anchor restless energy, support more restful sleep, and bring a steadiness to the emotional landscape — without dulling the natural vitality that summer is meant to bring.
If you have been meaning to come in, June is a particularly good time to do it.
Something new at AcuNiagara — introducing the Kobido AcuFacial
I am also excited to share that I have added a new signature treatment to the clinic: the Kobido AcuFacial.
Kobido is a traditional Japanese facial massage technique that works deeply with the muscles, fascia, and circulation of the face. It focuses on releasing tension in the neck, scalp, jaw, and face, with rhythmic lifting strokes and calming acupressure points. When combined with facial acupuncture, the results go well beyond skin-deep.
Together, they support lymphatic drainage, soften tension held in the jaw and forehead, improve circulation, and bring a genuine brightness to the skin that reflects what is happening on the inside and the outside.
This is the only place in Niagara where you can receive Kobido massage, and you can learn more about it here.
If you have been curious about facial acupuncture or Kobido facial massage, or if you are simply ready for something that feels as good as it looks, this is a lovely time to try it.
Reply to this email or book online to reserve your spot.
As always, thank you for being here and for trusting me with your care. I hope the rest of June is beautiful for you.
Warmly,
Barbara
