The world's largest music rightsholder, Universal Music Group (UMG), recently revealed that its existing agreement with TikTok has lapsed. In a statement released on January 30th, UMG declared that negotiations for a new deal with TikTok have not reached mutually agreeable terms. Consequently, upon the expiration of their current arrangement, UMG, encompassing Universal Music Publishing Group, will discontinue licensing content to both TikTok and TikTok Music services. Alongside this announcement, Universal issued an 'open letter to the artist and songwriter community,' shedding light on the reasons behind the breakdown in negotiations. The letter underscores UMG's persistent focus on "three critical issues" during contract renewal discussions with TikTok, namely, "appropriate compensation for our artists and songwriters, protecting human artists from the harmful effects of AI, and ensuring online safety for TikTok's users."

We would like to acknowledge the Yugambeh people, traditional custodians of the land on which we operate our business, and pay our respects to their elders past and present. We extend that respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders across Australia.
