[đź’ˇWFunHome] The Super-Swabe Art and Skill of Writing Effortless Yet Engaging Emails

Aug 28, 2023 10:01 am

Halu !

Hope you’re having an awesome Mondiday (Monday na Holiday, hehe)

I used to brag na clueless ako sa days of the week and holidays, kasi as a stay-at-home dad Freelancer, wala na ako halos paki-alam sa corporate cycle of vacation leaves and paydays.

But.. my son Julian is finally going to school for the first time this year.

he's six now, but his first couple years of school were online

Kaya ayon, napilitan uli ako maki-marites sa days of the week again.

Or else I might accidentally drive him to school on a Sunday hehe. I’m totally absent-minded kasi.

Ikaw din ba you have this same issue? Kwento naman dyan!

Hemingways, now that we’ve mastered the days of the week.. (yay!)

.. we can now move on to another skill that people who want to write emails for a living can use:

writing effortless and engaging emails.

Hahaha pilit ba?

Just like knowing which day it is can help you plan and schedule your week effectively, being able to write engaging, easy-to-read emails is crucial for clear communication.

O diba, pasok?

Seriously though, this builds up trust very quickly with your audience.

It’s an actual niche market inside of the bigger umbrella of email marketing, tapos in demand, and highly paid din sya.

However, mejo Afraidy Aguilar ang marami dito.

Most people have this notion na masakit sa ulo at mahirap syang gawin.

I can’t blame you, I used to feel this way din.

Kasi nga naman, it’s easy to run out of things to say.

But don’t worry, I gotchu.

Here’s a quick and fun guide on how to write emails that are effortless and easy to read.

Pero wait.

How do I know that my emails get read?

image

Well for one, I get a lot of replies from my emails. So I will assume that they read them hehe. Everyday meron talaga nag-rereply. Minsan multiple replies pa.

If you see your name there, I’m grateful to you. Sana di ka mag-sawa! Di lang nagkasya but there are many other threads like this.

I also get longer replies as well. I won’t paste them all here pero I’ll share some of the more recent ones.

“Wooooowwww Coach this is exactly what I am currently going through. Thank you for today's email Coach! Enjoy your weekend!”

Or

“so timely.... I just had my episode these past few days. consistently prospecting for 2 months and NR. but I am so glad I joined the webinar last night. Nabuhayan ako ng loob.”

Or

So enough of the proof lol. Let’s dive in!

I love using mnemonics and using multi-layered things in what I write.

To write effortless emails, you need to be able to C.H.I.L.L.

Nuks. deep.

You don’t need to write them in order, but if you make sure these things are in your email, you’re good to go.

Connect, Humanize, Inform, Listen, and LastCheck

Hehe pinilit talaga.

Let’s get started.

Connect: Start your email by connecting with and relating to your subscriber.

This could be a simple greeting or acknowledging a recent event that we can all relate to. I either start with the weather, maybe a holiday, or something funny…

Basta anything that’s trending or anything that comes from my library of survey replies from my welcome email. (More on this in later emails)

This makes it feel like I’m not just out there to get people’s money, and I’m really just acknowledging and engaging with you.

Syempre nag-invest ang reader mo ng time reading your email, and they trust you to not let them down… so you have to treat them right.

Think of it like this: You’re a GrabCar driver on a 60kmh trip through the Skyway on a late Wednesday night, and you’re guiding your readers with your thoughts smoothly.

Sure there are small bends and curves, but you get to your destination swabily (I invented that word, don’t worry - it means swabe) pa din.

As I’m writing this, it’s not lost on me na para palang na email-ception ako.

Because I’m trying to explain to you how I keep my emails effortless while writing an informative, effortless, and engaging email at the same time.

Let me know how I do okay?

Tindeh.

Humanize: Write in a friendly, conversational tone that makes you approachable and relatable.

This means we have to use words na bagay sa audience natin to make them feel at home.

For example, my audience is mainly people who are into Freelancing, and they’re around 30 to 56.4 years old on average. (Joke lang, pero I get replies from people who tell me their age, I don’t know why.)

I’m prone to writing high-fallutin words (recovering language nerd kasi ako hehe), so I try to write the way I talk in everyday life.

In other words, I’ll only use words that I say regularly from my actual mouth hole haha.

To check if you’re doing this right, just read your email aloud and if some of the words don’t feel natural on your own tongue, it’s a good idea to use a simpler word or remove the sentence na lang.

Totoo yan guys, best practice talaga to read your emails aloud para din mafeel mo kung sakto lang yung pag-flow nya.

The more neighborly or friendly lang yung kwento, the easier it is to digest ng readers mo, even if your email is loooong na.

You have to make them enjoy the journey of reading it, so to speak. Otherwise nag-unsub na sila sayo.

Depends pa din sa audience ha.

If peer-reviewed scientific journal ang audience mo, you’re not asking me for advice. hahaha

ProTip: Use the Hemingway App to check your grammar level and keep it under a 6th-grade reading level.

Inform: Provide any necessary information that supports your main point. Ito din yung meat ng email. I tend to put my research into the draft first, then build around it.

Syempre Google and AI are our best friends now, so I’ll use them first para makakuha ng relevant (but still dry, boring, or heavy) na data.

I’ll re-write the informative or educational part in such a way that makes it more memorable and humanize it pa lalo. I also like using similes or analogies to help people understand and visualize things more clearly.

You can go back up a bit and find some of them hiding in plain sight. ^_^

Listen: Show empathy and understanding. Consider the recipient’s perspective, then record and respond to their needs.

“Hi Coach Shoden, grabe tinamaan ako sa laman ng e-mail mo.”

I’ll take note of what people are saying sa replies nila because it’s a small reflection of what my subscribers must be feeling too.

So when I say listen, dapat mag copy paste ka din sa spreadsheet ng sinasabi nila. Hehe.

Wala e, pinilit ko kasi yung acronym para I sound intelligent kunwari. ^_^

Always be on the lookout for these emotions and store them in a spreadsheet so that you know what people are feeling, and you can be the helping hand that guides them through their hardship.

My motto here is if you re-write the boring info into something that’s emotional, memorable and/or witty, it stays with your readers more, they’ll like you more, and higher chance din na mag take action sila.

EMOTION + INFORMATION = PERSUASION.

So. Deep.

Last Check: Ito na yung part where you’re making sure maayos yung flow nya and coherent yung message mo, and okay amnam yung splleing mo. ;D

Nothing really much to say except check if matatawa ka ng slight sa sinulat mo, or if you were able to at least finish reading without falling asleep.

If yes, you’re good to go!!

Yun o! I didn’t realize this was going to turn into a TEDTalk na.

I’ll need to stop myself here.
