Wanted to share something really cool today, and it’s not what you think. 

It’s about HMOs or Health Maintenance Organizations. 

Patay eto na bebentahan na tayo ni Shoden ng insurance! 

Easy! hindi pa hahaha. 

I’m not going to sell you anything, kaya I hope you’ll humor me and read this through. 

As we all know, Freelancing is a business and a lifestyle. 

Sa kahit anong business, you need to have protection sa sudden unforeseen loss of anything. 

It could be loss of health (you got sick or your family member got sick), accidents, income loss, you name it, there’s some form of insurance for that. 

Heck, si David Beckham nga, his legs, feet, and toes were insured for frickin' $195 million.

Si Julia Roberts naman, she insured her smile for $30 million.

Life as a freelancer is amazing naman talaga. We get to work and live on our terms.

Pero yung lang, life is pretty unpredictable pa din. 

Amid the rush of chasing deadlines and working for our dreams, one essential aspect often takes a back seat - yung health natin. 

I admit it, I used to do this back when I was an active videographer. It was literally back-breaking work, kaya HMOs and life insurance companies actually classified our work as hazardous. 

And totoo to, I actually got my slipped disc injury from being a videographer.

I’m willing to bet this is also on your mind. 

“What if bigla akong magkasakit? What if di ko afford yung medical bills?”

On top of that, comparing HMOs are actually a big factor when you look for a job in the corporate world. 

Part sya sa benefits mo on top of your salary. 

Sadly, dahil watak-watak ang karaming mga freelancers mag work, and they’re often isolated from each other, hindi tayo makapag-apply as one big company or unit in order to benefit from economies of scale.

Makes sense naman diba?

The HMOs need to make their money din, kaya they stay away from individuals. 

Either you pay for private HMO at a huge premium fee, or mag avail ka ng mga prepaid health cards like Maria Health which have limited emergency coverage. 

Yon din isang bala ng mga naysayers natin. 

“Wala naman kayong health benefits e.”

And that was true for the longest time... 

Until the Freelance Movement Tribe did something about it. 

Kasi active members of the Freelance Movement actually get to sign up for their HMO as if we were a big company and naka-subsidize ang premium natin. 

Now I’m not selling you anything, gusto ko lang ipagyabang na meron option ang members ng tribe na sumali dito, AND they can also do get their family members and friends to sign up din with the same rate lang din. 

If member ka na now ng tribe, don’t let this opportunity pass kasi they don’t open the HMO registration often. In fact, last na yan this year. Next year pa uli bago mag-accept ng new round of applications. 

Now why am I sharing all of this with you kung member ka na ng tribe? 

It’s because there are a significant number of people here on this list who are not yet members, and freelancers na din naman. 

Every freelancer (Tribemate ka man o hindi) deserves the assurance that their

health and that of their family is protected. 

That they can continue to chase their dreams without the specter of healthcare costs casting a shadow over their journey.

So yun lang naman.
