Don't waste time on social media

Hi

One of the things my clients appreciate about working together is the feedback I give them on their writing. In the beginning, it can be hard to convey a strong message via your content and many people fall into the trap of writing for the sake of getting something out there and being "present" on social media.

Today I thought I would give you a feel for how I analyse content, by using a random example I found online and critiquing it.

This is a person who just finished their coaching qualification and they are announcing to the world that they are open for business. You can tell they are excited, but I don't think that enthusiasm is felt by their readers. See for yourself:

Some of their friends might indeed check out the website if only to see what they are up to. However, a stranger will scroll right past this post, because they can't immediately see what's in it for them.

Also, from a formatting perspective, the second paragraph is way too long. People who read this on their mobile will find it hard to get through a block of lengthy text. There are a lot more observations I could make but, at a first glance, these are my immediate thoughts.

I'm not bashing this person, not at all. They are clearly super excited about becoming a coach. But after months of nobody being interested in their coaching services, that enthusiasm will fade and will likely be replaced by doubt, frustration and decreased confidence.

Writing for yourself is not a great marketing technique. And I spare no tough love when it comes to the feedback I give my clients about their content creation. It might be uncomfortable the first time, but it's all worth it when they get enquiries based on their content.

Next time you hit "post", take a moment to think about the reader and what they need to hear from you to become interested in working together. Instead of writing 10 posts for the sake of it, write three impactful pieces of content that resonate with your readers. Anything else is a waste of your time and theirs.

Take care and speak soon,

Alisa
