Optimized Muslim Newsletter #3: Time, Metrics and 23&me

Mar 29, 2021 9:13 pm

as Salaamu Alaykum all,

An Idea I was thinking about this week

"The metrics we value are the guardrails of our intentions, actions, and values." A great quote I read this week. We track income, fitness, sleep and increasingly more as the individualised AI medical revolution takes place. What about metrics for our Deen? Again, let's be less airy fairy hoping for inspiration to hit us and more disciplined and action orientated.

Hadith of the week:

Honouring covenants is part of faith.' (Al-Hakim)

Two quotes to think about

"If we see someone throwing money away, we call that person crazy. Money has value. Wasting it seems nuts. And yet we see others—and ourselves—throw away something far more valuable every day: Time."

The Shortness of Time

Ibn Taymiyyah said: “Whoever exerts himself and seeks aid from Allah and adheres to seeking forgiveness and sacrificing, then most definitely Allah will give him from His goodness that which had never crossed his mind.”

A book to read:

48 Laws of Power - Robert Greene 8.5/10

A product to Consider:

23&me - My brother got me the kit as a gift and I found the results fascinating. Not only the health insights, e.g. I learned that I am a fast caffeine metaboliser and it's the decree of Allah that I am not one of the 2% who can get by on 5/6 hours of sleep and suffer no health consequences (as I would love to think) lol...but also you will be surprised to find other potential distant relatives who may have shared a great great great grandparent. Having said the above, you will need to assess whether or not you're willing to give your DNA to a company - a whole other topic.

One question to ask ourselves:

Am I a better Muslim this week compared to last? If not, why?
