What does it really mean to reinvent yourself?
Well, it is seeing a problem with how you do things and saying, “I can fix this. I can make it better.”
It starts with that mindset and continues with a constant willingness to grow, adapt, and evolve.
I’m always up for us celebrating our wins — a new car, an award, a successful project. But the truth is, yesterday’s success can quickly become today’s old news. That’s why one of the most powerful things anyone can do is to keep reinventing themselves.
In every area of your life, it is best to be open to reinventing yourself.
If you’re wondering, the idea for this letter struck me during a BusinessDay webinar I was invited to speak at last week. I found myself insistently reminding those at the webinar that we all need to keep reinventing ourselves.
Honestly, at the rate technology is moving and innovations like AI are transforming everything from business to storytelling, it is more important than ever to not be stuck in our old ways.
To stay relevant and impactful, you can’t afford to stay stuck in one way of doing things.
Whether you’re an entrepreneur, a creative, or a parent, ask yourself this question, ‘What new ways can I do things today to prepare better for tomorrow?’
Using myself as an example, I’ve seen the impact of trying new ways firsthand in my own journey as an author. When I began writing children’s books a few years ago, I started with the inspiring stories of Nigerian heroes like MKO Abiola. But soon I realized — why stop there? Why not tell the stories of great African leaders across the continent? And so, I began working on writing about trailblazers from Sierra Leone, Ghana, Liberia, and beyond. One of my stories is even being translated into another language — and we’re exploring how to bring these stories to life through technology too.
That is what reinvention looks like. Not just creating something great, but allowing it to also grow, evolve, and outlive you.
So today, I challenge you:
- Reflect on your journey.
- Study the lives of people who’ve gone before you.
- Ask yourself what you can learn and how you can keep evolving as 2025 goes on.
Reinvent yourself, again and again. That’s how you can live your best life.
