{{contact.first_name}}, you can’t control everything

Hello ,

SURPRISE!!!

That was the word I heard and I almost turned back 😂

I laugh now, but in that moment, as I walked into a room full of family and friends I had known over the years, I was beyond surprised when they all shouted, “SURPRISE!!!”

Even now as I put this letter together, I’m still surprised at how they pulled off a surprise party for my 40th, which was a month ago.

I thought I was already done with any form of birthday celebrations but this experience reminded me that life is full of surprises. There are surprises around every corner that we can’t control and can easily blow your mind.

Let me tell you a bit of backstory to bring this in: I am getting better at being a bit of a control freak — especially in my own home. I like to control every single thing. I love to know every single thing that happens in the house. I know all my children’s clothes and what they are wearing and doing at every time. I know all my husband does too.

However, for the last two weeks, I started noticing things I couldn’t control. My husband was acting weird and I felt there was something he was not telling me. My children were whispering around the house and I said to myself, there is something they are also not telling me.

Now, the past me who is more of a control freak than my present self, would have automatically started probing everyone and asking questions. I would have ended up fighting everybody just to make them tell me.

But as time passes, I’m learning to let things go. So, this time, I chose to look away, turn to the other side and just let everybody be. Yet, two days before Friday, the 14th. I started feeling so uneasy and so I prayed about not being able to control everything. On that fateful Friday evening, it all came together when I heard it - SURPRISE!

I finally understood what all the whispering and hiding was all about.

I say this jokingly but the truth is what I’ve learnt from this is that in life, you can’t control everything—good, bad, or ugly.

You can only change your perspective. It’s your perspective that shapes how you respond to the surprises that life throws at you.

As I mentioned earlier, two weeks ago, I was suspecting things but I said to myself that I’m not going to control everything and I’ll just let it go. I’ll not let anything disturb my peace.

We all encounter situations that throw us off balance. We can begin our weeks feeling great, only to have something unexpected happen midweek that derails us. It’s almost as if life shouts, “SURPRISE!”

These surprises could come in many forms—a job loss, a failure, a disappointment, unexpected news, a surprise baby, or even a surprise proposal.

Whatever surprises await you this week, remember that you cannot control everything. Choose to maintain a perspective filled with peace, joy, and hope.

Remind yourself: “I’m not God Almighty; I’m not El Shaddai… lol. I won’t let myself be overwhelmed by trying to control everything.” When faced with a bad surprise, choose to take a positive mindset. When a delightful surprise comes, enjoy the moment.

No matter what life throws at you, surprises will always be unexpected—but your response is entirely up to you. This week, let go of the urge to control everything. Affirm to yourself, “I’ll control my reactions instead.”

Before I conclude this letter, I want to say thank you.

I want to say a special thank you to my family and friends who dedicated two months to planning a beautiful surprise for my 40th birthday. I was genuinely blown away. I’m thankful for every person who surrounds me. God bless you all.

And to my readers: may God bless you too. I love you all and I’m cheering for you this week!

Keep shining and have a blessed week!

Warmly,

Olamidotun VO.

Affirmation for the week

image

“I cannot control everything but I trust God to control all that is around me.

I know He will work all things together for my good.

I do not live in worry

I do not live in doubt.

I depend on God and live a life where I pray to Him and I trust Him.

I live a life where I trust God to work all things together for my good.”
