Following the signs, the roads get smaller and smaller until you feel as if your driving a trail across private property. Afraid you missed a turn, you are about to turn around, when you come upon a black stone gate, then climb a short hill to a monument and tiny cemetery commemorating the battle that took place here almost 250 years ago. It’s in the middle of nowhere in marshy land where multiple creeks meet. Storms have washed away parts of the trails, tumbling railroad ties like a toddler throwing a tantrum with his lego blocks. And as you walk through the seemingly forgotten wilderness, you keep seeing white wooden crosses that mark the originally unmarked graves of soldiers buried where they had fallen. Hallowed ground all around.
