Learn: How to iterate>ideate, New funny podcast, 3-2-1 Sleep Formula,

Greetings from Austin,
The word of the week is iteration.
For years I wanted to write a newsletter before starting. But I've learned 10x more by starting and iterating through feedback vs. just ideating without action.
Tbh I feel a similar way with podcasting that I'm only now starting to prioritize. An internal alarm starts ringing when I ideate too long without action. Time to get a move on it. Time for iterations.
Reply to this email 1 thing you're iterating on. I'd love to know.
Here are your 3 goodies of the week.
🔁 Ideation vs Iteration
Something that’s abundantly clear to me now, but wish I learned earlier…
Is the difference between ideation and iteration.
Perfect example is this guy @CulturalTutor on Twitter (x whatever), who was working at McDonald’s 18 months ago.
Now he has 1.5m Twitter followers and 100k newsletter subs. How in the world did he do it?
Simple. He published writing every day for over a year.
He says, "What you lack is deadlines, not ideas."
Deadlines = iterations
This unlocked 10x better output and exponential growth.
Here's his tweet just six weeks after quitting McDonald's.
This is the power of iterations.
Check out these examples here.
🎙️ New Pod Episode w/ Comedian Joel Byars
On average, kids laugh 300 times a day, but adults laugh only 4 times a day. :(
I interviewed comedian Joel Byars on my podcast recently and we laughed WAY more than 4 times (especially the second half of the chat).
Joel is not only hilarious, but super knowledgable about comedic structure, styles, and ideas.
A few highlights from the episode:
- How to bring humor into everyday work & life
- Joel helps me write a joke live
- We break down his marketing strategy and then I give him feedback (which he calls therapy)
It gets especially good around the 29 minute mark when he helps me write a joke live (lol gets a little spicy 🌶️ ).
🛏️ 3-2-1 Sleep
I’ve always loved this framework to get better sleep. Whenever I use it, it straight-up works.
- 3 hours before bed: no more food
- 2 hours before bed: no more work
- 1 hour before bed: no more screens
But I’ll admit, lately I’ve been doing 3-2-1 minutes, not hours. That, my friends, does not work.
However, now I’m getting back into it. Instead of thinking how to be perfect, I just want to get started. (remember iteration>ideation?)
So I updated the calendar with just the 3-hour and 2-hour reminders to make it easier.
What are you iterating on this week? (Hit reply and tell me)
Con mucho gusto,
Mitchell
