Summer Math Reset #5: What I prepare before August ends
Jun 30, 2026 12:01 pm
Hi teacher,
Every year, I tell myself the same thing:
"This year, I'm going to be completely ready by the first day of school."
And every year, reality has other plans. 😅
Somewhere between meetings, classroom setup, emails, and last-minute changes, August gets busy fast.
That's why I've stopped trying to prepare everything before school starts.
Instead, I focus on a few things that make the biggest difference.
Before August ends, I try to have:
✔ My classroom routines planned
✔ My first week activities ready
✔ A plan for early finishers
✔ A simple review routine in place
✔ A rough outline of the first unit
That's it.
Not every worksheet.
Not every assessment.
Not every lesson through October.
Just the things that help the school year start smoothly.
I've found that when those pieces are ready, I can handle the rest as it comes.
And honestly, my August is a lot less stressful because of it.
Try this before summer ends:
Make a short list of the 5 things that will have the biggest impact on your first month of school.
Focus on those first.
Perfection can wait.
A smooth start is usually more valuable than a perfect plan.
Thanks for joining me for this first month of Summer Math Reset!
What's one thing you always make sure is ready before students walk through the door on Day 1? I'd love to hear your answer.
