Spotlight of the Week

Sunset Boulevard – The Musical (Malta premiere)

If you only do one “proper night out” this week, make it this. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard arrives in Valletta with a full-scale production and a limited run — and producers are positioning it as a milestone for Maltese musical theatre.

Local tip: it’s a four-show weekend. If you want the best availability, Sunday matinee usually moves slower than Friday/Saturday evenings. If you’re going with family, note the minimum age is 12+.

When: Fri 20 Mar (19:30) • Sat 21 Mar (19:30) • Sun 22 Mar (14:30 & 19:30)

Where: Mediterranean Conference Centre (MCC), Valletta

3 things to do this week:

  1. Waslet Is-Siegħa / “The time has come” (Free, Gozo) – open-air Passion play in the streets of Sannat

When: Sat 21 Mar (19:00–21:00)

Where: Gruwa / Triq il-Gruwa, Ta’ Sannat, Gozo

Why go: dramatic, visual, deeply local — one of those “this is Gozo” evenings

  1. The Magro Easter Family Fest (Gozo, family-friendly) – the opening session of Gozo’s big Easter season family programme

When: Sat 21 Mar (10:00–13:30)

Where: Savina Artisan Centre, Xewkija

Why go: rides + activities in a very easy morning plan; go early to avoid queues/parking stress

  1. St. Patrick’s Day in Għajnsielem (Free, Gozo) – live music + a proper family afternoon into evening

When: Tue 17 Mar (13:30–22:30)

Where: Għajnsielem Football Club, Gozo

Why go: music-heavy, casual, and genuinely easy to attend with kids

Coming Up

Freedom Day (Jum il-Ħelsien) & the National Regatta – Tue 31 March (public holiday)

One of the biggest “watch it like a local” days of the year: ceremonies + the traditional Grand Harbour regatta with clubs racing for the Palju. Best vibes are along the Three Cities waterfront (and elevated viewpoints if you want the full harbour scene).

Dark Malta Festival 2026 – Fri 17 to Sun 19 April (Gianpula)

Malta’s alternative weekender: gothic / industrial / metal acts, DJ sets, the Oskura art exhibition and market energy. If this is your crowd, don’t leave tickets to the last minute.

Where to Go

illy Caffè – St Lucia Street, Valletta

A polished, design-forward coffee stop right in the capital — and one that’s already being used for culture collabs (including a Maltese Art Collection exhibition). If you want an “Italian coffee break” that feels premium without being stiff, this is a solid pick.

Go for: a proper espresso + pastry (and a calm mid-morning table before Valletta gets busy).

Get Involved

AAA Malta (Association for Abandoned Animals) – sanctuary volunteers needed

If you’ve ever wanted a volunteer role that’s unmistakably useful: AAA’s dog sanctuary needs hands for day-to-day care (cleaning, bedding, meds support, vet runs, rescues) and they’re especially keen on skilled help (maintenance, gardening, repairs, painting).

Quick Hits

Plan ahead: Malta International Fireworks Festival (late April — 25th anniversary edition)

If you want one “Malta in full volume” night this spring, it’s this. The 25th anniversary edition runs 18–30 April with competitive nights in the Grand Harbour and a big Valletta finale — the kind of event that rewards planning (best viewpoints get packed early).

Key dates (official programme):

  • 18 Apr: Nadur, Gozo (opening night)
  • 20 & 25 Apr: Grand Harbour, Valletta (competitive nights)
  • 30 Apr: Grand Harbour, Valletta (grand finale)

Local-style tips:

Arrive early (seriously), go for elevated views (Upper Barrakka / Three Cities waterfront), and if you’re shooting photos bring a tripod + a wide lens.

What people are talking about: Verdala Wellness Hotel’s wellness-first dining

Verdala (Rabat) is pushing a full wellness concept — “five pillars” programmes and conscious dining that’s more longevity than luxury-for-show. If Malta hospitality is your thing, this is a trend marker.
