This week in Malta: Electronic, Rock, Vegan and Sport - 18 May 2026 to 24 May 2026

May 18, 2026 6:01 am

Hi,

This week, Malta's folk soul comes alive: Festghana runs from Thursday through Sunday in Floriana and Zejtun, and it's one of those events that reminds you why living here is different from anywhere else. And if you want something more unexpected, Wednesday evening at Hagar Qim is a one-hour sonic performance using field recordings from Maltese heritage sites - open air, experimental, and genuinely unlike anything else on the calendar this week.

THIS WEEK IN MALTA

- Festghana 2026 opens this Thursday at Argotti Gardens in Floriana and runs through Sunday, with performances, processions, and food events celebrating Malta's UNESCO-recognised folk song tradition.

- UNFOLD, a contemporary dance double bill by ZfinMalta, opens Friday evening at Teatru Manoel in Valletta and plays three nights only - the kind of local production that rarely gets the audience it deserves.

- The sea is warming up and weekend crowds at the most popular bays are starting to build - if you're planning a first swim of the season this week, earlier morning hours will reward you.

SPOTLIGHT OF THE WEEK: FESTGHANA 2026

Ghana is one of those things that makes Malta genuinely its own place - a tradition of improvised folk singing that goes back centuries and earned UNESCO recognition for good reason. Festghana 2026 runs four days across Argotti Gardens in Floriana and Gnien l-Ghannejja in Zejtun, with evening performances, workshops, community processions, and food events woven throughout.

If you have never seen ghana live, this is the week to fix that. It's not a polished stage show - it's call-and-response singing between poets, often competitive, always specific to the moment. The Zejtun venue in particular has a neighbourhood feel that puts you right in the middle of things rather than watching from a distance. Check the programme at the link below for the full schedule - some events are free, others ticketed, and the mix changes each night.

Details: 21-24 May 2026, multiple evening events each day - Argotti Gardens, Floriana and Gnien l-Ghannejja, Zejtun - Info Here.

WHERE TO GO: ALL'ANTICO VINAIO IN VALLETTA

The cult Florentine schiacciata brand opened its first Malta outlet on Republic Street in late April and it's already drawing a queue. If you haven't been to the original in Florence, the concept is simple: overstuffed flatbread sandwiches, made fast, eaten standing up, very good.

The Malta location has its own exclusive creations alongside the classics - go around opening time (10:00) before the lunchtime crowd hits, or later in the afternoon when things calm down. Good option if you're walking the length of Valletta and need something real to eat.

Location: Republic Street, Valletta

Hours: Daily 10:00-22:00

Find them: here.

GET INVOLVED: HAL FAR OUTREACH IS LOOKING FOR COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS

Hal Far Outreach runs digital literacy sessions, English classes, and social activities for asylum seekers and refugees living in Malta's open centres. It's steady, practical, human work - the kind that makes a real difference week to week.

They need volunteers on a regular basis, including Saturday morning digital literacy sessions and recurring English classes. It's ideal if you have a few hours free each week and want to contribute something more than a one-off donation.

How to join: here.

QUICK HITS

- db Group's Hard Rock Hotel and Malta's largest shopping mall are on track to open at St George's Bay in Pembroke this summer - worth watching if you live or work near that part of the island (more here).

- Save the date: Malta International Arts Festival runs 12-21 June 2026 across Valletta and Floriana - most ticketed shows are 10-20 euros and the outdoor installations are free, so start looking at the programme now (more here).

- Local gem: The Still Time photography and painting retrospective at Valletta Contemporary is free and runs until 20 June - if you are in Valletta any afternoon this week (open 14:00-19:00), it is worth 30 minutes of your time at 15-17 Triq Lvant.
