This Week in Malta - 13th to 19th of April 2026: Dark Malta, Coldplay, Imagine Dragons, Fireworks (ofc)

Apr 13, 2026 6:01 am

Hi,

Dark Malta Festival kicks off this Friday at Gianpula Village - three days of live bands, DJ sets, an alternative market, and a pool party that somehow makes perfect sense in the April sunshine. And if you want to ease into the week more gently, tonight's candlelit string concert at the Phoenicia is doing Coldplay and Imagine Dragons justice with nothing but candles and a string quartet. Two very different nights, both worth your time.

THIS WEEK IN MALTA

- The Malta International Fireworks Festival launches this Saturday, 18 April, with pyromusical displays over the Grand Harbour in Valletta - free to watch from the bastions, and one of the best free nights out you'll have all year.

- April beach season is properly underway now, with temperatures hitting 18-22 degrees this week - Golden Bay and Mellieha Bay are seeing the first swimmers of 2026, well before the summer crowds arrive.

- The Ta' Qali farmers' market this weekend is worth the trip - April is peak season for Maltese strawberries, broad beans, and artichokes, and the stalls right now are as good as they get all year.

SPOTLIGHT OF THE WEEK: DARK MALTA FESTIVAL 2026

Seven editions in and this is still the most committed alternative festival on the island - three full days of gothic, industrial, and metal at Gianpula Village, with live bands, DJ sets, art exhibitions, an alternative market, and yes, a pool party.

What makes it work is the mix. You get serious live music alongside traders selling things you won't find anywhere else in Malta, all in a venue that handles big crowds well. If you've never been, Friday afternoon is a good entry point - the festival opens at 3pm, the market is on, and the atmosphere builds through the evening before the headline acts later in the night. Check the full lineup and ticket options before you go because pricing and set times are updated regularly on the official site.

Details: Friday 17 April (3pm) to Sunday 19 April (11:45pm) - Gianpula Village, Zebbugg - Info Here.

WHAT'S ON: 3 THINGS TO DO THIS WEEK

1. CANDLELIGHT: COLDPLAY VS. IMAGINE DRAGONS - a string quartet, 200 candles, and two decades of anthems inside one of Malta's most elegant hotel ballrooms.

When: Monday 13 April, 9:00 PM

  Where: The Phoenicia Malta, Floriana

  Cost: From 45.50 euros

  Tickets/info: Here.

Why go: It's tonight, it's intimate, and the Phoenicia is a genuinely beautiful room for this kind of thing - the format really works in a candlelit space.

2. TOTALLY 80s NIGHT - an affordable retro night of synth-pop and neon that punches above its 10-euro price tag.

  When: Saturday 18 April

  Where: Treehaus UNO Malta, Attard

  Cost: 10 euros

  Tickets/info: here.

Why go: It's cheap, it's fun, and Attard is an easy reach from most of the island - good option if Dark Malta isn't your scene.

3. MALTA INTERNATIONAL FIREWORKS FESTIVAL - opening night of the Grand Harbour pyromusical spectacular, free from the Valletta bastions.

  When: Saturday 18 April

  Where: Grand Harbour, Valletta

Why go: The Grand Harbour is the best fireworks backdrop in the Mediterranean, and it costs nothing - bring a jacket and get there early for a good spot on the Upper Barrakka side.

WHERE TO GO: TA' QALI FARMERS' MARKET IN ATTARD

This is a proper working farmers' market, not a lifestyle pop-up - local growers selling seasonal produce at the Crafts Village in Ta' Qali, and right now it's at its best.

April means Maltese strawberries, fresh broad beans, artichokes, and asparagus - the kind of produce that tastes completely different when it was picked a day ago and traveled about eight kilometres. Perfect for anyone who cooks, anyone building a weekend routine, or anyone who just wants to spend a slow Saturday morning doing something that feels genuinely local.

Location: Ta' Qali Crafts Village, Attard

Hours: Weekends - check locally for exact opening times

GET INVOLVED: HOSPICE MALTA IS LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS

Hospice Malta provides palliative care and support to patients and families across the island - the kind of work that makes a real difference in people's hardest moments.

They need people for a range of roles this year: patient care support, reception cover, driving patients to appointments, home visits, and fundraising. Even a few hours a week counts, and full induction and training are provided. It's a meaningful commitment that suits people who want to give their time in a structured, supported way.

How to join: Here.

QUICK HITS

- The Malta International Fireworks Festival runs from 18 to 30 April, with displays at Grand Harbour, Marsaxlokk, and Bugibba - free entry at all locations, so worth planning your evenings around the schedule. Check Here.

- Save the date: Hard Rock Hotel Malta opens in July 2026 with reservations already live - if you're planning a staycation or have visitors coming in summer, it's worth watching this one closely.

- Local gem: Ramla Bay in Gozo is half-empty on weekday mornings right now - the water is clear, the red sand is as good as it gets, and you'll have it almost to yourself before the summer ferries start running full.
