I’ve been writing and self-publishing my books for almost a decade! I cannot believe how fast that time has flown. But, after publishing ten books over a decade I have a lot of experience with readers, specifically romance readers.

And here is what I have to say:

People may denigrate romances but you, my friend, are very smart!

Hopefully, you don’t need me to tell you that you are not reading your mother’s romances. Romance novels today tackle tough subjects and educate us, even as they entertain and provide that wonderful escapist experience we count on in a great love story.

I did hear back from readers who are still a little confused when they are introduced to so many characters but I have two remedies for this.

1/ Don’t worry too much about it! Seriously, the characters that matter will unfold and you will get to know them the way smart women get to know and make friends—a little at a time.

Remember the personality quizzes that used to be in every issue of Cosmopolitan Magazine? Or the quiz to find out which character from Sex in the City you most resembled? I loved those.

Do you ever picture anyone famous playing the part of the lead characters in the novels you read? Who would play the brooding hero if they made your favorite novel into a movie?

I want each of you to picture the hero of your dreams, and be the heroine of all my novels. Still I admit, I do use a picture of someone famous when I start a book. Not his personality, only his likeness, to help me describe more realistic features.

Sometimes I clip a picture of a model that floats my boat, sometimes I use a movie star, current or past. Here are some that I have used in my prior novels. Can you match the hero to the Beguiling Bachelor? Haven’t read the books yet? Start the series here.
