Hi
Yes we can experience peace and presence every day, and its a practice:)
Is there one key practice that is foundational for both of these?
This is what I found myself contemplating ... in reviewing my years of experience and learning for the most helpful and fundamental concepts to inspire the path to peace and presence.
Could there be a single concept that is a catalyst for both?
Well if I could share one key for both that I rely on...
it would have to be self-awareness or consciousness.
There are 3 definitions of consciousness in this Psychology Today article and the capacity to narrate one's own experience is at the root of the definition we want to reference. When we have this explicit self knowledge - we know how we are feeling and thinking.
In my life and with my enthusiasm I know I get caught up in my external world - responding to it, being with it - and often having much fun.
Yes, so many years externally focussed, with little or no conscious knowledge of how i was in the moment until my emotions would unexpectedly speak loudly:)!
Without this self awareness/knowledge there is no way we can shift our state of being - we have to know where/how we are in this moment. Only then can we initiate our tried and true practices to bring us to the state we would rather be.
As Dr. Maya Angelou said 'when we know better we can do better'
Even with our own self knowledge this is true.
As my own self knowledge and development evolved and then became further refined with a focus on peace and presence I rely on my own self awareness to know how far i was away from either of these states.
Many times we are 'caught up' in the experience and are not tracking our own experience - until perhaps feelings that are too big to be ignored start directing surprising and impulsive behaviours. And often behaviours oud rather not be responsible for.
BUT HEY!!
knowing your experience of the current circumstance is the start.
And if it is not your desired state of being you can consciously change and create new behaviours, imaginings and thoughts that will shift you closer to your desired state.
So back to Dr. Maya Angelou, a close mentor to Oprah, celebrated author, actress, and wise woman extraordinaire, and the whole quote is:
"Do the best you can until you know better.
Then when you know better, do better."
Dr. Maya Angelou.
So now that you know better you can do better:) (only If this resonates).
... with both peace and presence for yourself.
Your soul will love your for it - self recognition is a form of self love:)
Tracking how you are in the moment gives you the opportunity to use your skills to shift into more peace and presence, taking responsibility to know yourself and love yourself rests with you.
Maybe this mantra I use will help you.
'In this moment, in every cell of my body, I feel peace and presence arising' :)
Would love to hear if this idea resonates with you and how are you at tracking you:):)
