Excerpt from The Third Wish

Everything about him screams danger.

And yet, I push my chair back and circle the table warily until I stand right next to him. My senses are singing, warning signals passing from synapse to synapse, my lizard brain screaming I should run.

And another, just as deep part of me, says to stay.

To touch. To claim. To secure this powerful creature just for me. It’s arousal that comes from some deep, primal parts of my being, telling me to mate with the superior creature. It’s want framed as an evolutionary drive to secure his genes for my offspring.

I never felt it before. I’m startled to even know it’s there, a powerful force driving my decisions. The animal female within me, wanting the biggest, strongest mate.

Ridwan’s eyes swirl with gold, and he growls, making me jump.

“You can do what you want with me,” he says, voice low, eyes chilling in their intensity. “Anything you want. You decide.”

Decide? Easy for him to say. I don’t know how to decide when various urges and thoughts pull me in different directions, and it feels like I’m being torn apart at the seams by my internal fight.

To run. To mate. To refuse. To be scared. To be generous. To sit back and talk. To hope. To brace for disappointment.

But he is also right. Until I make a decision, this noise will not quiet. Whatever those parts of me want, I am in charge.

I raise my hand slowly and touch the sharp tip of his ear, gently stroking it with the pads of my fingers. His skin is smooth and cool here, even though I can feel the heat of his torso pressing against my thighs and belly.

Ridwan makes a low, pleased noise in the back of his throat, and his eyes flicker closed before he opens them wide, as if determined to keep watching. We stare at each other, and I don’t blink, sucked into his beautiful, magical gaze.

“Do you want to know a secret?” he murmurs, sitting perfectly still, his face turned up to me.

I nod, and he moves his head slightly, pressing into my featherlight touch until I cup the side of his face, the color of my skin clashing with the alien tone of his.

“You’re the first woman to touch me in this form.”
