Lesson 1 – What is a Squeeze Play in Bridge?
Adam introduces us to a simple approach to squeeze play in this first video in the series. It is essentially playing all our winners in a sensible order and hoping something good happens. It may sound like luck, but with a plan there may be nothing the opponents can do.
What is a squeeze?
A squeeze is a card play technique that leaves at least one opponent with more winners than cards they can keep in their hand. Also, we must have a card that will become a winner when they discard any of these cards.
North S A 3 H- D- C T | ||
West S 9 8 H – D – C J | East S- H 5 4 D – C 4 | |
South S 2 H Q 3 D – C – |
When S plays the HQ, what does W discard? They could try the S9 or S8 but then S’s S3 will become good. Alternatively, they could try discarding their CJ but then declarer’s CT becomes good. Either way W has to throw a potential winner, setting up a winner in N’s hand.
The ingredients – P.O.T.
Just like a cake, we need the right ingredients for a squeeze to be possible. The ingredients are:
- Potential winners – we need at least two cards which may become winners.
- One loser – we have enough winners that only trick 13 may lose.
- Transportation – a way to get to our winner once our opponent has been forced to make a discard making it a winner.
After watching the video above, try playing all four hands for one of the boards below:
