Our three primary types of defensive signals are attitude, count, and suit preference.

Suit preference is best employed when attitude and count do not help the defenders, and one of those situations occurs when we are defending a suit contract and a singleton in the suit of the opening lead shows up in the dummy.

With no future in the suit led, which suit should the defense switch to at trick two? A suit preference signal will guide the defense in this situation.
